I'd have thought more Canadians would have answered your question, but it seems as though a bit of misinformation has been offered to you.
I too would like to ask specifically in what sense do you mean? I'll give it a shot though.
First off health care. While Kjetil is right it isn't 'free' (nothing in life is) assuming that 7% of an individual's pay goes straight to health care is incorrect. That sort of assumption indicates that an individual who is unemployed, has no access to health care. Wrong. No matter who you are, you will not be denied health care. And that care is top notch.
The misinformation comes from people who have to wait for some services. The system is based on a triage model, and care is assessed by need, not first come first served. Each province is responsible for their own systems, and while yes, part of your income taxes go towards capital health, so do sales taxes on the products you purchase, money from the federal government, profit from trade, etc. And ask a person who doesn’t have health insurance in the US what system they would prefer. Canada’s isn’t perfect and many people have additional coverage like Blue Cross as prescription drugs are not covered. But nor will you be swimming in debt for the rest of your life for the medical care you receive after a car crash.
For a ‘small country’ with ‘no economic clout’ ???? LOL. Well now, I suppose that depends on your point of view. If by small one means the second largest country in the world, and a member of the G-8, then yes by those standards Canada is small with no economic clout. Canada is the USA’s largest trading partner to the benefit of both nations. And incidentally, yesterday the US$ was worth only $1.04 CAD a mere 5 years since the CAD was at an all time low of .62 US. Canada always ranks above the US in the UN’s Human Development Index, though sadly we have slipped from 2nd to 6th place in recent years, we are better at hockey, and we do have polar bears.
While it sometimes feels as though we are being slowly swallowed up by our neighbours, we do have a national identity. The fact that we notice differences is proof of that. Our sense of humour is sharper, our attitudes are more open, we tend to think more critically, and we actually care about our profile in the world. |

That's a trick question ..
Canada has many things to offer as does the US ..
We have a decent health care system , many natural resources , our cities are not over crowded , education standards are very good , our average climate is good , most cities are safe although we do have our share of problems , taxes are a bit high on many things compared to the US but our average salary's are higher . Canada is a great place to live and raise a family ..
The US has lots of things to offer as well so I guess it would depend on who you are and where you live and what you are looking for . |

Others have asked how you mean your question so I won't. I'm an American living in Canada for a year now. Yes I really like Canada but I miss my redneck home in the US too. The health care isn't free but it's better than what I had in the US.
Wages are higher but so is the cost of living. In many respects I believe the countries are best to their own citizens & for their own reasons. There are quite a few things done differently here, and that works for Canadians but being American, at times my paitents is tested. The US IS military but Canada really doesn't have one that is very large. The long and the short of it, I like Canada and welcome learning to live here. |

They do offer free health care in Canada.... |
|

Better in what way?
Health care is not free--everyone pays for it from their first job through retirement, every time they receive a pay packet, 7% is automatically deducted to pay the obligatory health care--no choice in the matter. So, forced payments for a system most Canadians think is not very good.
As a small country, they have to tread lightly in foreign policy, because they don't have much economic clout.
Canada's better in hockey. They've got better cold weather too. And better in having more polar bears.
Anything else you want to know, re: "better"? |

It depends. The Canada we knew is certainly not the Canada of today. We are the cousins of the USA and anything they (USA)want they get.
Canadian troops were seen as peacekeepers now we are on the battlefront.
We have NAFTA wherein Canada has yet to benefit.
We pay very high taxes
We have no national identity
Canadian retail industry and major companies are being swallowed up by US giants without the benefit of great prices to the consumers.
When the the US sneezes we have a cold.
I can go on and on |

I think that Canada is better in the respect that they are rational when it comes to relations with other countries. They do not get involved where they do not belong and respect other's pboundaries. However, when it comes to offering free health care, it generally means that the service and quality of their health care is not as good, because in order to give this free health care, they have to either spend less money on supplies, or dig themselves into national debt. Speaking of which, they are also not as loose with their money as the US, nor do they put out as much pollution, have as much crime, etc.
However, it is known that the US is a much stronger country than Canada, and more influential. I'd say Canada is better ethics-wise, but when it comes to power, the US is the top dog. |
