No, it's different. Most stores etc accept US money no questions. Our money (Canadian) is like monopoly money all different colour's with cool graphics. You can exchange it at any bank and as of now it's close to par in difference. Hope this helps. |

When you go for the visit, make sure that you convert any canadian currency back to us currency. Mosts places in the states won't accept canadian money. |

Well, both the American and Canadian currency are called "Dollar", but they are different from each other; it's just that both currencies are called "Dollar".
As of now the exchange rate is:
CN$1=US$1.03173 |

No, Canadian funds are not the same as American. While American funds are widely recognized, it is likely preferrable to use Canadian funds particularly at small businesses. Right now the Canadian (cdn) dollar is trading above the American dollar. As of today, the rate is approximately 1.03 cdn = 1 usd. You can exchange your funds at currency exchange booths which are located at Canadian airport terminals, and most malls in Toronto. You can also most likely exchange your American funds at the hotel you stay at or at any major bank in Toronto. Hope you enjoy your stay in Toronto! |

The currency we use here in Canada is both visually different and also different in worth. Our currency is not in any way, dependant on the USD, just as theirs isn't on ours. For the last 30 years, the USD has been worth more, but in the last month or so, our currency has shot up past the USD and as of Oct 24th, was trading at 1 Canadian dollar getting you 1.03 USD. That means the Canuck buck is worth more (costs less Can$ to get to get more USD). It seems that some Americans answering this question are getting a little confused as to how the exchange rate goes. If they want to buy one of our dollars...they have to pay 1 USD and 3 cents. We on the other hand, if we want a US buck, only have to shell out a little over 96 cents Canadian. They're just used to it being the other way around for the last 30 years, so they're forgiven for being a little confused.
As for your trip here, don't bother bringing any USD unless you plan on extending your trip to the US. Convert what you'll need for the trip to Can $ at your own bank, where, if you're a long time customer, you'll get a favourable rate of exchange as opposed to a currency outlet here. If you try to use USD here now, it'll have to be exchanged at the going rate which could actually have you losing depending on the currency you are starting with (your country's money), especially if our dollar continues to climb as expected and the USD sinks.
Another option is of course credit card and ATM transactions. If your home bank is a member of Interac or Cirrus, for example, you could possibly use our ATM machines to make cash withdrawls from your bank account at home. Your financial institution will convert the amount to your native currency and charge a small transaction fee, but you'll get Canadian dollars from the machine, although not at as much of a favourable rate. The banks like to make their money. :)
Same goes for a credit card purchase, but you'll have the usual interest charges to deal with.
Travellers checks are yet another option and in most large urban centres, are used easily. Using one in a Mom and Pop smoke shop though, might not wash. Talk to your bank to find out your options. |
