Is Quebec City worth a quick visit from Montreal? |
I'm visiting Montreal in October for a conference, but a friend said she heard Quebec City was "cool". I know nothing about Canada in general but am starting to learn. I've got 2 days on either end of the trip that I can sight see. Should I stick with just seeing Montreal or try to spend time seeing Quebec City also. If so, where should I stay? |

Think about spending your time wisely. Depending on where you are in Montreal you will spend 2 to 3 hours just getting to Quebec if you go the fast way by car. Then you have to get around the city. Look for parking, maybe get lost. visit a bit and come back (again 2 to 3 hours).
Quebec is a very nice and easily visited city in only one day. You can do sightseeing and some shopping. Montreal has the same to offer and much more attractions. Montreal also has the metro subway that lets you get around town so much faster and quicker.
Personally I'd stay in Montreal and keep Quebec city for a longer stay.
Have fun! |

I would say so if you had more time, but if you only have two days I would stick to Montreal. It's true that Quebec City is a beautiful city but if it's your first time in Montreal then it would be worth it to stay there and explore the city.
If you do decide to visit Quebec City, check out the old quarter. The first time I stumbled into this area I couldn't believe it, I thought I was in Europe. Very beautiful. |

quebec is 3 hours north of montreal, but it is worth seeing because there is just so much to do there, and it has more charm and its older than montreal, but montreal is very nice too, look for chain hotels in the ste-foy part of quebec city or small boutique hotels in the old city. |

If you can do go to Quebec city it is well worth the trip BUT be prepared French is VERY dominant there. My French isn't that great but I've gotten along there without any (that much) problems. Inspite of everyone everyone saying that Montreal has a European flavour it DOES NOT it is just another North American city if you can't get away than touring Montreal is better than nothing but not by much. |

If you have time, definitely. A one-day trip to tour the Old Town could very well be worthwhile. There are buses leaving from Montreal to Quebec City (and back) every hour or sometimes every half hour.
Montreal is just like any other North American city, really and is sadly nothing special anymore. I really don't understand tourists choosing Montreal over Quebec City...it is much more beautiful, going out or clubbing is a lot cheaper, great cuisine, a lot cleaner and represents Quebec spirit so much more. |

Since you are here for a short trip, I agree with staying in Montreal. Depending on what you like to do, their is lots to see here. Beautiful old Montreal and Old Port has to be seen. A little bit of Europe in North America! If you like walking/nature - downtown you have le Mont-Royal - the mountain - it's a great hike to the top and has beautiful views of Montreal and the surrounding areas. If you prefer biking, off the old port you can rent bike and bike along the Canal Lachine... And lots more! check out the city of montreal website at http://ville.montreal.qc.ca/
While you are here, practice a few French words and enjoy our city
Welcome to Montreal Quebec! |
