Is Toronto a world class city? |
I'm from Toronto, and I say no.
It's a great city to live in, but world class? Our waterfront is a mess, we have huge financial problems, and there isn't enough in Toronto to make it world class. The people who run Toronto could make it world class if they wanted, but they aren't.
Historic Rome is world-class, France is world class, New York city is world class. Toronto? No sadly it isn't. If we have to tell people our city is world class, or work to make it so, then we aren't world class.
Glad I got that off my chest, does anybody agree with me? |

I'd agree with you. While Toronto dwellers could sure give you lots of great places in the city, they aren't doing this in the scope of the WORLD. All 6.5 billion of it.
I'm sure they'll tell you how it's the financial center of canada, but again, canada's population is only 32 million. Also, I've heard many of my swelled head suburban cousins in toronto say they live in the 5th largest city in north america. Only people from Toronto would brag about being fifth at anything.
Great city with many sights, and not a huge homeless problem like in Vancouver, yes. World class, no. |

Toronto has been classified as a second tier world city. There are four first tier world cities. New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo. Second tier cities include L.A., Moscow, Hong Kong, etc....I believe there are 8 second tier world cities.
I love Toronto, the most diversed city in the world, we're very tolerant of others, have world class venues, and architecture. And of course Toronto delivers for Canada, over 30% of the country's GDP comes from Toronto. |

Toronto is the most culturally diverse city in the world, with over 100 000 immigrants from every corner of the world arriving each year, that in itself makes it world class. Secondly, it is a mecca for entertainment, architecturally esthetic and even with a disasterous few years in manufacturing the economy is still great, so i would say you are completely wrong - toronto hater |

Toronto doesn't need a label - it's in a class by itself!

I've seen enough places to be proud to call Toronto home:

It is a young vibrant city. It is lacking in medieval architecture, granted. Perhaps there is more romanticism in the old world or perhaps the sheer overwhelming mass of the great US cities is more to your liking. But no city is more culturally diverse. And that mingling and mixture of different peoples gives Torontonians a more compassionate and understanding view. Toronto is the now. You should feel proud and enjoy it. |

1st or 5th! We are too insecure to be anything close to a World Class City. It's a safe place to visit, the people here for the most part are very friendly and polite . We seem to get along with one other better than most cities this size. The Crime rate is down comparable. Its a clean city, it has one of the best or possibly THE best transit system in the world. The dinning and shopping here is World Class. Our sports attract a great deal attention through out the world. We have no military, we pride ourselves on being world peace -keepers . Our politicians never make World Class statements on World issues. We allow gays to marry, and women to choose, we band most guns. And we do not put our criminals to death no matter what! We have a very diverse city: home to more nationalities than any other city in the world. We still have one of the best social and health care systems in the world. We have one of the lowest poverty rates in the world. We feed and educate all our children and protect our animals. We allow all religions to co-exist and pass their world along to anyone who will listen. Our Government, police and court systems are not as corrupt as other countries. Our dollar is standing tall as to is our economic out look and the job rate is looking possitive. We live longer in Canada than almost any other country....Maybe, just maybe we are a World Class Country instead. Why does it have to be all about Toronto?
Jay from Toronto, Canada, This is the best place to be. For me! CANADA.... EH! And we have Rita! |

I've laways heard it was the most diverse, vibrant, etc... but when I got there, I found it kinda bland, actually.
I'd sooner consider Montreal and Vancouver to be world-class; Toronto reminds me of Edmonton a lot: it toots its own horn a lot, but doesn't really deliver. |

Toronto can't be a world-class city until it gets an NFL team to complete the Big Four of pro sports. |
