Is Toronto to Canada what New York is to America and the same goes for Vancouver and San Francisco?

Yes because... a lot of our media comes from Toronto, for example most of the national magazines are published there, and they pretty well think Toronto is the only part of Canada that matters. Vancouver has a liberal minded West Coast lifestyle and the biggest gay population in Canada, and a large China Town as well as lots of Asians in general. Your analogy is pretty accurate.

I would say that's a pretty reasonable comparison. Toronto is obviously much smaller than New York, and the fact that it's not a coastal city changes the dynamic quite a bit, but in terms of being the busiest/largest city then yes. Vancouver is much busier and more dynamic/metropolitan than San Francisco, albeit with a similar laid back lifestyle and high tourist volume.

From geographical point of view, you are absolutely correct!

Toronto is on eastern side of the country (not on the coast though), and Vancouver is on western coast.

Vancouver even has own "Golden Gates" build by Guiness brothers (makers of Guiness beer and authors of Guiness book)

But the fact that population of New York city is almost half of population of the whole Canada makes a huge difference against Toronto.

hi again
Yes most definitely...Usually you'll hear Toronto, New York, Montreal, Miami, L.A., San Fransisco, Milan, Paris and Rome are all 'those types of cities'.

i would think so . right now toronto and vancouver are both very huge here . you can compare them but even here on vancouver island , we have victoria which is also a very touristy capital city .
take care . D

yes. everything is either in toronto vancouver or montreal

teachingboytoy
I think the comparison is valid, but Torontonians are much less sophisticated and savvy than New Yorkers. They, however, would like the comparison.

I don't know that much about Vancouver and San Franscisco, but I'd say, from what I've heard and read, that they compare well.
