it is way more expensive in canada... I live in Ontario Canada and we travel across the border all the time and when I first went into the grocery store and saw canadian beer I almost had a heart attack OUR beer is cheaper in USA... that is CRAZY!!! and like someone else said everything is more expensive in canada they are right! another example is MILK my son drinks H o m o milk in canada a jug of h o m o milk is just over $5, in USA it is just under $2. so with exchange you can get 2 jugs of milk for cheaper then you can get one in canada... |

Spirits are much, MUCH more expensive in Canada.
Wines are somewhat more expensive (equal to about $US 4 - 4.50 per bottle for identical wines) but there are some wonderful wines sold in Canada (ON, QC, and BC are the big wine selection provinces with ALBTA coming up fast) not generally available in the USA, and most of our wonderful wines from B.C. (some are among the world's finest) are not sold in the USA because quantities are limited and we drink 'em up ourselves..
Beer, as noted by Toni_S..., is typically about 60% more expensive in Canada but in Québec it is only about 30% more expensive. But the regular lagers in Canada are better than yours (sadly we lack the breadth of all your great microbrews!).
Contrary to expectations, booze is not always less expensive at duty-frees than it is in just regular American stores. First of all, the size of spirits sold at US Duty Frees is the 1.14liter, the 1.75 liters is not, so the per ml cost is commonly more than - say - regular prices per ml for 1.75s in cheaper states like New Hampshire. Second, the wine tax in the US is so low that most US Duty Frees do not even bother to stock many.
For your info your limit per person of (Canadian) legal age is 1.14L of spirits OR 1.5L of wine OR 24 355ml bottles of beer.
If you are driving alone Canadian Customs will generally not charge for an extra bottle of wine or an extra 12 pack of beer or ale AS LONG AS YOU DECLARE IT but because of the so high taxes they usually will charge if you bring in a 1.75 L bottle of spirits. They might overlook the extra .36L if you bring two 750ml bottles, though.
PS: John L. is partially incorrect about Québec. Québec, uniquely among Canadian provinces, allows beers and ales, and producers private brand label wines if they are bottled in Québec, to be sold at grocery stores. Québec grown wines and artisan liquers can also be sold in specalty farm markets that sell locally grown produce and cheeses, including European-style urban markets like there are 3 or 4 of in Montréal. |

It's much more expensive in Canada. But be aware that there is a limit to how much you can take across the border. |

Booze is much MORE expensive in Canada then it is in the USA.
A 12 pack of beer in WA.State costs about 11$ where as here in Canada it's 27$.
Hard stuff is more here in Canada then it is in the USA too. |

Like everyone else said, it's more expensive in Canada. But you can only bring in 40 ounces/1.14 litres of booze or a case of beer per person. Sometimes they let you bring more, but don't count on it. So buy a bottle at the duty free, but bring money for more.
If you're wondering how much more, the only place to buy booze in Quebec is at the province's SAQ which conveniently puts its catalog and prices on-line. If you like rum, try some Cuban rum you can't get in the U.S. |
