When I was going to school 25-30 years ago, we were told that North American continent consisted of three countries:
1) Canada
2) USA
3) Mexico
I can't recall if Greenland was ever mentioned, but I do know that all the countries below Mexico were grouped together and classified as Central America, and South America started at Columbia.
According to most atlases today, they say that North America consists of 23 countries, that includes Greenland, the Carribean, and all the countries in Central America.

Well, considering that there's nothing further north, except the North Pole, if Canada weren't in North America what would be? |

yes, it is.
Note to those who think there are only three countries in NA:
Central America is not a continent; it is a region (of seven nations) that is part of the North American continent. The Caribbean is another region usually grouped with North America as well.
Greenland and Bermuda are generally considered North America as well, geographically if not necessarily politically.
And lastly, there are two French islands off the Newfoundland coast which are geographically North American, although politically are not. |
