Around the subway station isn't all bad. There's a lot of decent restaurants on the Junction, and the area is starting to build up again. It's also known as Malta Village, so if you're Maltese or like the Maltese Culture, it's a nice place to live.

JavaJoe
Are you talking the area around the subway station Dundas West, or the area also known as "Little Portugal"?

If you're talking around the subway station, I don't like it. If you're talking specifically about Little Portugal then it does have a certain charm about it. I've never lived there however so I can't tell you more on it.

I would recommend a little further west from there....that is the high park area and I think it is a lot nicer than the Dundas West area.

I probably don't know, but violence may acquire in almost every part of the city. Not just in Dundas West. "Sleeping" areas where there is no business or stores may be more secure than heavy density areas. Toronto Beaches area is the best. I was living there 10 years and it is a very friendly environment to live in.

Ask someone from there, LOL

Dundas West undergoes several changes in character before entering Mississauga. The central part (@ Spadina) has Chinatown, then it comes quite close to the Kensington Market area which has its charms.
Then (after Bathurst) you are in the Southern edge of Little Italy, Trinity-Bellwoods Park, then the Portuguese area around Dufferin with many new and exciting places (the Lula Lounge is the best Latin and African music & dance place in all of Canada), and Dufferin Grove quite close... a very groovy ambience (in the context of Toronto, of course) without the forced hipness of West Queen West, which is really close if you really need it.
Further west, High Park is a very nice urban park with tennis courts, swimming pool, baseball and other sports, plus bike paths, a gorgeous lake, several gardens, etc.
Going into Etobicoke, there is some loss of character unless you have roots in the place. There are some very nice neighborhoods but transportation to the city can become a little heavy on the nerves.
