Canada is a huge country and French is predominately spoken in Quebec, and parts of the other Provinces especially New Brunswick.
I have lived here in Canada for thirty years and there have only been a handful of occasions when good French would have been handy, but I was able to use my grade 4 French and muddle through!
If you plan to work for the Canadian Government then it would be necessary to be fluent in both French and English. |

French (as a culture) is important to the fabric of Canada. Without the competition from the two major European powers of the time (France and England) as they battled it out for colonial supremacy and economic bonanzas like the fur trade and precious metals, there wouldn't really be a country called Canada. In fact, there probably wouldn't even be a US, either!
As a language, French is important in that it contains the heritage of the French colonial period and yet is still active and current enough to handle the 21st century. Knowing more about a people and their history makes dealing with them easier on a day-to-day basis.
As far as opportunities in Canada: French is a nominal requirement for some provincial government employment (notably Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia), and definitely required for federal employment. It's also fairly common for tourism-related jobs, at least in eastern Canada.
Think about it - approximately 27 percent of the country's population lives and works in Quebec. If you count the number of other French-speaking families from other provinces, it's probably close to a third of the country whose first language is French. How important would it be if you couldn't talk to either of your neighbors because YOU spoke a different language; or that they couldn't speak to you?
Lastly - if (English) Canada were to turn its back on the French language and culture, what kind of message would that send to the rest of the world when Canada is trying to present an image of acceptance, tolerance, and moderation for all nationalities? |

I've worked in 2 different federal government agencies for a year, and I only knew English, though they were university coop jobs. Knowing French will open doors in the government, but there are definitely departments that only or primarily use English.
Outside of Quebec, French is also an official language in New Brunswick, but English is by far the majority language. |

You Know It's True

No, not even. Only in Quebec where everyone speaks it. |

Only in Quebec the rest of the country hates it. French Canadians arent really popular with the rest of Canada. |

It's quite weird, english speakers can't stand french speakers. How about the contrary.
It's exactly the same in Belgium.
