Yes and no. No question that it has a high proportion of street people of one kind or another, drug use and drug dealing, some of it pretty public, some violence. It's only a few blocks that are really bad. But I've spent a fair amount of time working in the neighbourhood and have never had a problem. My car has been parked down there all day long many times, broken into once, nothing stolen. In fact, contrary to what you'd expect, the street people are mostly pretty friendly or like most of us they ignore anyone they don't already know. Not firing on all cylinders in many cases, for one reason or another, but friendly. I've walked my dog down there and she gets a great reception. I would have no hesitation about going down there in the daytime by myself, with or without the dog, and at night would go but stick to well-lighted streets and not hang around long. |

Sure is. Main and Hastings is a major drug using and dealing area and is constantly under surveillance by the Vancouver Police drug squad. As you go east on Hastings Street it gets even worse. A good area to stay away from. |

i like it, because it looks really old it reminds me of Europe, if the drug problem is gone it wouldn't be bad |

asking if hastings in vancouver is really that bad...is like saying being trapped in a room with a hungry tiger is no biggy.
for some places on hastings its not bad. but on east hastings...its terrible. east hastings in vancouver is not only the worst part of vancouver but the worst part of canada. its a slum. once i was taking the bus on hastings to visit my grandma in chinatown...and the bus broke. in the 20 min that took the bus driver to realize that the bus broke. a drunk guy outside the bus walked up to me (i was sitting beside a window) stared me..then tried to spit the window and smooshed his cigratte at where he spat. then 2 guys walked by the bus and started injecting drugs with needles. i saw at least 30 hobos, and at least 3 prostiutes. and in the ally i could see a drug addict sitting on a blanket right in the middle messing her hair up and scratching herself. then i saw a flashing police car zoom by and an ambulance following it. when we had to get off the bus and walk to the next bus stop, it stank so bad. if you walk 2 feet from a hobo you can smell urnine.
thats a typical day at hastings. |

West Hastings is one of the wealthiest areas in Vancouver. East Hastings between Columbia and Pender is in the area of the poorest neighbourhood in Canada. East Hastings from Pender East to Burnaby is a relatively poor area, but is nevertheless a family oriented area, with a real push to maintain a decent lifestyle and keep the crime and addiction from encroaching. Main and Hastings is the true "inner core" of Vancouver, its part of the original downtown area and has succumbed to urban decay. The "industry of poverty" has taken hold, preventing the people who want to reclaim their neighbourhood from doing so. The free needle exchanges, safe injection sites, numerous free services, etc. just promote and prolong the disfunction. |

Parts of Hastings Street are pretty rough - the Main and Hastings area in particular, but once you get away from that stretch of turf, you are in the business area of downtown Vancouver, or heading out toward the suburbs and things are pretty decent.
Main and Hastings has long been a trouble spot for drugs and prostitution, but with the Olympic Village being built just a couple of blocks away, I would venture to guess the area will be well policed and cleaned up before 2010. |

Sure is. Not the nicest or safest place to be especially walking. When I have to drive down that road I make sure my windows are rolled up and doors locked on my truck. |
