Is health care in Canada really free?

Healthcare in Canada is organised through an insurance pool for residents in each province. The program is paid for through taxation or a taxation levy, depending on the province.

The great thing about this scheme of health care is that every resident is covered, you can never be denied care, insurance does not depend on employment, or being married to an insurance holder or previous illness. You can never be turned down or bankrupted, or refused service.

The things that aren't included are dental, optical and prescriptions.

It is subsidized. It is very reasonable .I hear Americans complaining AND laughing at our higher taxes but our taxes go to subsidize many programs including Health care ...so that no Canadian goes without it because they can not afford the hefty costs by themselves

It's That Guy
Of course not! They just choose to pay for it in a different way. Their way of doing health insurance results in health care costing half as much and working as well or better than the US system.

It bothers me when Americans deliberately call any kind of universal health care 'socialized medicine', or talk of 'free' health care. Even Michael Moore does it. He just means you don't pay when you need medical services, you pay insurance. Nobody every seriously said it would be -free-.

pinkpiglet126
No it's not free. We pay for it through our taxes and in some provinces they also have health care premiums (insurance premiums) on top of the taxes.

Universal health care just means that we don't have to pay when we walk into a doctors office or the ER. It doesn't cost us $1000/day to be in the hospital. That is already taken care of through the health care system. We still pay for it though.

dont taze me bro
No, we pay high taxes.

It can depend on various factors. For some Provinces it isn't, others it is. You may have a program through your job in which it is covered, or you may pay a monthly fee that is very reasonable. It is definitely not the same cost as HealthCare in the US.

Here is some information on the Canadian health care system.

It is free to a certain extent. Recently, the government has included small health care premiums for people with higher incomes.

I have included information on a comparison between American and Canada's health care systems.

it is free, but pills are not. but you half to have a health card. get from the government. i live in canada in the maritimes.

harry k
Nothing in life is free.

Depending on the province, you have to pay a small portion outright or is all paid through taxes.

Also, look at Helena's sites, Canadians also pay with their lives. If you read here links carefully you will notice the mortality rates for cancer patients are higher in Canada than they are in the US. In simple terms if you get cancer your chances of surviving it are better in the US than Canada.
