Is hitchhiking popular in Canada?

I have done a lot of driving in most parts of Canada in recent years, and I rarely see hitchhikers. A few more of them are on the roads and highways in summer ovbiously, but it is actually illegal in some parts of Canada. Canada's weather during a significant part of the year, and its geography, does not lend itself to hitchhiking - wind, rain, fog, snow, sleet, large empty spaces. I would say that most of Canada is very safe for hitchhikers though. I did a considerable amount of hitchhiking in Canada in my hippie days.

No it's not popular at all

It depends where you are. In my corner of BC I see hitchhikers 4 or 5 days a week during the summer just on my 10 minute ride to work. The main highway is no hitchhiking too, as are several or all BC 4 lane major highways, but the other highways are fine, and hitchhikers seem to think the on ramps are fine as you see them there. I know of a couple other places in BC where it is also common.

Here's a link to a site where they hold a hitchhiking race across Canada. They did it a couple summers ago, and are planning to do it again.

No! You rarely see a hitchhiker. It is not only illegal it is dangerous.

Brad Johnson
nope it ain't popular

Ajidamoon
It is illegal here......but I live in Northern Ontario, off of a highway between to major cities.....we see a couple hitchikers a week, but they have to be nuts to try that in this day and age, even in Canada.
