If you do find a cheap place to live, then there will most likely be a good reason (or bad reason depending on how you look at it). If you don't mind lot's of room-mates, rent sharing does take the cost down.

No, unfortunately it is not cheap to live in Vancouver especially in the downtown area. Houses start at $500,000+. Vancouver has become the most expensive city to live in Canada. If you want something cheaper you will have to look at the suburbs at least 30 kilometres away from downtown Vancouver, ex. Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, Pitt Meadows, etc. Here are some realestate websites to give you an idea.

It varies from suburb to suburb and prices are highly related to traffic congestion levels. Pretty much everywhere in Vancouver turns into gridlock for at least some portion of the day... it just depends on how much you can handle it. You get what you pay for if you live in the farthest suburbs. Out in Langley, a 1.5 hour drive out of downtown during the day, house prices are still in the $400,000 range but in Surrey (closer in but riddled with crime--crack heads and car theives) you can still find houses for $200,000. Traffic is no better though but the crime pushes the house prices down further. Plus its boring as sh!t out there! Anywhere in Vancouver proper, is going to cost you plenty. If you're looking for an apartment, to buy, you're probably looking at at least $280,000 on the east side and over $320,000 for the west side. Houses on the west side start at around $800,000 while they're more like $550,000 and up on the east side. Rental wise, don't expect to pay any less than $700 a month for a basement suite. I'm renting a 1 bedroom out for $1,300 and the last time I listed it, I got 63 calls by noon the first day. References have to be flawless and credit has to be excellent or you'll never get called back.

Hello. It all depends where you live right now. If you live in Canada, then moving to Vancouver will be very difficult as others have said it is one of the most expensive cities. In the late 80s and early 90s, it exploded with a lot of money and immigration from Asia before 1999 (Hong Kong back to China). If you are also coming from abroad with either Euros, sterling or the like, it will seem a lot cheaper than London or Paris.

It is a really beautiful city and very close to the outdoors - mountains, ocean etc. It does have some funny bi-laws re: drinking, pubs etc. However, if you are a sports fanatic than it doesn't matter. You'll be more interested in getting fit than drinking and staying out late

good luck.

Sorry but the house prices are among the highest if not the absolute highest in Canada. I know, I'm born, raised and living in Vancouver.
If you go about 50 miles east of Vancouver, the house prices start to get reasonable and there are some very nice areas to live in.

Purchasing a home or renting a home, townhouse, apartments, condo anywhere in BC, Alberta has gone up period. Its absolutely crazy.. out of these $400,000 to $500,000 homes are actually worth that price??? Truly not many. I live in Alberta and have been watching the market closely between BC to SASK. We recently bought a house so that's what got me going on seeing what everywhere else is like. Here in Alberta this spring the market for anything is going up an additional 15 to 20%. I'm in the Slave Lake area you cant buy a NEW home here for under $450,000.... older homes yes but are really run down or OLD with no perks like most fancier older homes. We only came across 1 home worth the extra buck... Take your time searching and if possible go Private.. the seller needs to be Private we saved over 10 grand. Get a Realtor for YOU to handle the paperwork it doesn't cost too much when doing it that way. Saves on headaches.

Vancouver like any city has some great homes but in really crappy area's.. do your research

Even in remote areas.. for $500,000 there had better be a a white sandy beach attached to my home with a boat and dock.

We lucked out because the people we bought our home from needed the money ASAP. There are deals just need to truly shop around

live in Burnaby $650 for a 1 bedroom,Transit is reasonable. Some subsidys around.. Medicare $ 96,00 for 2 hospital free I have lived here 67 years.
