The cost of living probably evens out between the two countries in the long run. The Canadian dollar is worth about 87cents on an american dollar right now so theres not as big a difference as in past years. In Canada even though we pay more in taxes, we also get a GST rebate 4 times a year, and very cheap medical coverage. Realestate prices vary greatly depending on where you live. Living even a few miles outside of a large city will make a difference of several thousands of dollars. For just land prices you can pay from dirt cheap to very expensive for prime farm land. ( Canada has some of the best farm land in the world.) There are several federal and provincial grants available for starting businesses as well as grants and bursaries for school. The big difference is that we have a lot of social services which really help in emergencies which aren't available elsewhere. In the USA minimum wage runs from no set minimum to $7.50 an hour whereas in Canada it runs from $6.50 to $8.50 an hour. We also are entitled to paid bereavement time, sick time, etc. In that aspect our wage scale is more evenly distributed than it is in the States. In some of the oil fields in Northern BC and Alberta a heavy equipment mechanic can make as much as $10,000 to $15,000 a month and live at the camp for free. ( I have a friend doing that and that's what he makes) The bottom line is that it probably all evens out in the end between the two countries when you take all of these factors into consideration. This of course is if you don't have a lot of illnesses or do not require on going medical care in which case Canada would definately be cheaper.
The stats on Pay scales for both countries is outlined in the two websites below.

for medical yes..but the us exchange rate is approximately 1.10 ...some things are cheaper..but we are heavily taxed on liquor and cigarettes ...all in all I think it works out to about the same.

hrothunder
Probably canada. They have less tax and you get free med insurance.

Yes, Canada is cheaper, especially in currency. I went to Victoria and everything was sooooooooooooooo cheap compared to even our smallest cities.

Screw you, Matt (first poster)...go back to your trailer. Anyways, it depends on the area, like in the US. Where I live, a 3 bedroom house goes for around $350,000.00 but in Toronto a house the same size would be $750,000.00...It's like buying a home in Beverly Hills or Omaha...of course the cost of living is different in different areas.

NO, Canada takes 30% of your income in taxes. Remember that someone is paying for that socialized healthcare.
