Is it hard living in Montréal, Québec, knowing little French?

I can learn, but not very quickly. I know some basics (I took French for four years in elementary school), but that's it.

LIKE, if I wanted to get a job to help pay through university (I'm thinking of going to McGill, so), then how hard would it be to get one if you know little French?
Additional Details
Yeah, I can read simple french pretty easy but when it comes to the oral stuff, I just get lost. Especially when people speak really fast!

The French tapes are actually a good idea, I think that would be fun. I might even go to Montreal for a bit! That would be even funner! I don't think I can afford to go to Paris.

Thanks so far you guys. I'm just gonna keep the question up for a bit to see more answers. I see lil bits of discrepancies, I think.

I know many people living in Montreal, that have spent their entire life in Montreal and can't speak a word of French. So if you want a job, you can get a job.

Sam
I'm from Toronto and in the same boat as you... I only took French in elementary school so of course I don't know very much at all... other than what is written on our dual packaging.

But... I went to Paris for three weeks, you would be surprised at just how much French I learned on the short trip. so the moral of the story is, keep an open mind, buy a French book, better yet, French CDs, BEFORE you move, and when you immerse yourself in a predominately French speaking city, you'll find that you will pick up on french in no time.

The only jobs that anglos who can't speak French can get in Montreal, for the most part, are telemarketing jobs and some limited retail jobs in and around the McGill ghetto. There are also some limited on-campus jobs at McGill that do not require being able to speak French. And these jobs are very competitive for obvious reasons. I would not move to Montreal with the expectation of being able to find a job if I did not have at least some level of French skills. Sorry.

well, it depends what kind of job u want to get, i live in ottawa and im completely bilingual. You should be able to get one since a lot of people there enjoy meeting english people or just simply people that speak english (i dunno why)
Good Luck !
