Is it just me or are Calgarians too high on themselves.? |
I have noticed that whenever I talk to people from Calgary, all they can talk about is.....Calgary.
Are my experiences just coincidental, or do they reflectthe true nature of Calgarians? Additional Details 1000 miles away from a city of any size?
Edmonton is 300 km away, and it has a CMA of 1,040,000 people.....
Also, just because a person is from Toronto does not mean they know anything. |

You wouldn't happen to be from Edmonton would you?
Calgarians seem to me like a guy from Toronto married a Texan and they gave birth to a Calgarian. |

i like people from calgary, and what a beautiful city. only there once. perhaps give them a break. notice where calgary is located, they can't help thinking they are the center of the known universe. it's a thousand miles to the next city of any size. kinda cool in that respect. |

LOL. I'm guilty. As a former Calgarian i can understand the attachment.
I left Calgary because it has become a huge money pit full of non calgarians who have changed things to be like their community. (all sorts)
I was thoroughly disgusted with Calgary when I left. My poor taste in talking about it too much was about letting it go.
I used to be proud of my home town, now I'm sick of hearing it too.
On behalf of my fellow Calgarians, I do apologize as we haven't always been this way. What a disappointment. |

hahahaha well i like to think that because we have oil.... and we are one of the most richest provinces that we have quite the power to make decisions without being influenced... but because so many people immigrate there is a mix of people! hahahaha
i hope we dont seem to high :P |

Just you, you must be from Edmonupchuk and a bit jealous |

Yep, you are from Edmonchuk alright. Calgarians have to talk to you that way because that is all you can hear or even expect to hear. |

Well, if you talk to Calgarians about Calgary, then yes they will talk about the city.
The difference here is that there is alot of pride and a very optimistic attitude in the city. Noone here thinks it is the centre of the universe, but we are happy to be here due to the economy and opportunities that are arising all the time.
Every city will have people who dont like living there, Calgary included. But this is a city where if you have the will, you can do very very well.
I think you are giving too much importance to the city actually. Just steer the topic away from the city and they will talk about other things too.
You wrote about your town in the comments, I am sure that doesnt mean that you ONLY talk about your town. |

It's the same thing as Americans assuming the whole world is like them. When something gets too big and too much starts happening within it gets really hard to start looking outside of what you belong to. You can't deny there is some crazy dynamics going on in Calgary. It's hard not to talk about it when you meet people who don't live here (I'm guilty of it myself. I'll admit it) All you can do is remind people caught in it that is what they are doing. Hell, I had to do it at work today when we were talking about the Picton trial (Seems nobody here has any comprehension of the East Hastings is cause there isn't a place like it here) Just as you do with Torontonians, Quebec sovereigntists, and American tourists; be civil and point it out. It's the only way people learn. |

i wouldn't know as i never talked to a Calgarian. maybe it's just you or maybe it's them depends on how many you talked to and what they all had to say about Calgary.

It isn't Calgarians it is Canadians in general. They have to be since they know deep down that they play 2nd fiddle to the US, big time! I know I am from Toronto. |
