I'm old enough , and have the years of service ( 30 years in the CF ) to be able to say that "peacekeeping " is only one of the many tasks that the CF does.
Canada has NO (as in zero ) troops in Iraq.
We do have a 2500 person ( yeah we have female combat soldiers ) combat group in the "sand box " and every time we face off with Timmy the taliban, we hand him his head on a plate. He can't hope to defeat us in a face to face fight so now he is attacking un-armed aid workers . How brave is that ?
Canada , during WW2, had a all volunteer army, and with a total population at that time of only 10 million people, we had over ONE million men and women in uniform. That works out to one out of every four adult males, in uniform. Canada was able to fight on two diffrent fronts at the same time.
Canada has never started a war, but we have NEVER been defeated, either. Not a bad record, eh ?

Unfortunately Canada is "at war" right now in afghanistan ... a hundred of our guys have died there. Proportionally we have lost more troops than the US has there (US =500 but ten times more troops) In fact its only US, Canada, Dutch and UK thats really engaging in battle with Taliban in the south of the country. The rest of the Nato bunch (France, Germany, etc) all have their troops huddled nice and safely in Kabul afraid. They want to be seen as "participating" but worried one of their guys might get hurt. See if we ever save their butts again!!
We have battle ships in the Gulf of Arabia as part of Iraq thing but no troops in that hellhole (thank god!)
Mostly "peacekeeping" before that; Kosovo our planes helped bomb the Serbs back to the stone age, before that where in Somalia before it went to crap and in Crete and mid-east but as "peace keepers"
Before that, only actual combat war was Korean War and of course we were in WWI and WWII a couple years before the US joined in. |

There are close to 3,000 Canadian forces currently in Afghanistan. You need to watch CNN, FOX, CNBC, MSNBC more and less of MTV and MTV2. |

It's really unfortunate that people (primarily Canadians) don't pick up a newspaper once in awhile and get their facts straight. Most of the previous answers are close, but every one of them has something that is incorrect.
Freeside was close, but blew is when he said we have 'battleships' in the Gulf of Arabia. We do not have 'battleships' in the Gulf of Arabia or anywhere else. Currently, we have a supply ship and one Frigate in the Persian Gulf. As far as Serbia is concerned, that was no peace keeping mission. Canadian Forces fought and fought hard in that part of the world both on the ground and in the air. The Balkans was no peace keeping mission.
Rebecca - sorry hon, we do not have a presence in Iraq and our troops in Afghanistan are on a combat, kick ***, war mission. NOT a peacekeeping mission.
Thinkingtime: You need an update but. There's no peacekeeping in Afghanistan because there is no peace in Afghanistan. Like I said, Canada's role in Afghanistan right now, is kick *** combat, pure and simple. And in spite of the fact that most Canadians are delusional enough to think that the Canadian Army is trained and used for peacekeeping, sorry, but our troops are fully combat trained and ready and are as good as any combat troops on the planet.

I'm Canadian. We aren't usually at war because we are a peaceful country. Most of our prime ministers have said no to war, and we have a pretty strong reputation for being peaceful. It makes living in Canada easier, and I feel fortunate to live in a country where I don't have to worry about bombs being dropped on my house.
The reason we're in Iraq right now is to help STOP the war. |

Canadians are peacekeeping in Afghanistan but they are NOT in Iraq.
Edit:
The difference between the Canadian presence in Afghanistan and the American presence in Iraq is that the Canadians did not declare war on Afghanistan and the Americans did declare war on, and invade, Iraq. |

People in Canada need GOOD reasons to go into war and kill other people of other nations.
Not all countries think this way.... |

Canada is not an instigator of war. We usually show up to help out whoever is in trouble. In fact, we have joined most wars the US has been in recently. Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan.
Do you remember the White House being burned down? That was us. Don't you sing about it in your national anthem?
Hopefully you are returning to school this year to learn some history. So sad that Americans only learn about themselves and no one else. |

I am not Canadian and I don't undertand why Americans treat Canadians this way, when the Canadians have done so much to help people around the world.
They were in World War 1, 2 (exemplary bravery in this war), Korean War, Kosovo. They rescued American hostages in Iran by hiding them in the Canadian embassy and sneaking them out of Iran as Canadians. They are in Afghanistan doing a good job not that American give a damn, calling their contribution to Afghanistan meaningless or saying they are not doing much there. They were helping americans during Katrina even before FEMA got there.
They are not irresponsible like Us governments trainig and giving Sadam Huseein weapons knowing he was a dictator, donald rumsfield was seen shaking his hand many years ago. Starting an irresponsible war in Iraq, made the situation worse in Afghanistan and now soldiers of other nations have to die and clean up the **** cerated by US governments. Why should they die for ther irresponsbility and lack of accountability of US governments.
But as always Americans think they are the only ones helping people aroudn the world, the Canadians do just as much. Only difference they don't start irresponsible wars. |
