You can smoke marijuana legally in Canada if you have a prescription and if you have been approved by Health Canada and received your Authorization to Possess card. It is a complicated process to get these approvals, and it usually means the person has a very serious condition such as terminal cancer.
With that said, here in Canada we tend to be rather tolerant of possession of a small amount of weed for personal use. We are not uptight about it. It is not legal here, but neither will most people pay attention if you are using common sense. Keep in mind that if you smoke, and then attempt to travel by air, the sniffer dogs at the airports can pick up the smell of marijuana residue on your clothing and luggage, and you could find yourself in an awkward situation, especially if you are crossing the border into the US when it is picked up.
Smoking weed is legal in Amsterdam, so from that perspective it would be less of a risk. |

There is no age restrictions no. It doesn't work like that. It's illegal to traffic, grow and sell pot. It isn't illegal to carry less than 3 grams on you. Well maybe it is, but the laws don't support it anymore. There's zero repercussions for a few grams if you get caught. Now how can somebody buy pot if it's illegal to sell it? Yeah makes no sense. It's a circular type of legal system that doesn't make sense, or a 'loophole' have you.
We don't have any pot cafe's anywhere, you can't buy it on the street. We do have a lot of gov't grow houses with the best pot you can find. And you can get it filled as a prescription at the pharmacy. But you need a prescription from a doctor, usually terminal illness is the only legal way to get that filled.
From what I was told its not legal in Amsterdam either, just a vague legal system and a blind eye. But if you buy pot at a cafe in Amsterdam you have to consume it on the premesis in a specifically zoned area. It's not the entire city. |

Last I heard, it's not legal, but it's "decriminalized" to be in possession of a small amount. This means that having it would get you a ticket instead of a criminal record. It's still criminal to sell it though. |

It's illegal for anyone of any age to smoke in Canada. It was decriminalized for exactly one month last year, but was then made illegal again.
What's basically happened is that most Canadians feel that marijuana doesn't have enough of a negative impact on society to justify the cost of policing users. And lets face it, most people in Canada have smoked at one point.
As long as you don't smoke in front of little kids, no one cares. You can smoke in front of City Hall, walking down the street, and usually no one will care. Even if cops see you, then usually won't care, unless you have a pound on you.
It's not legal to smoke in Canada, it's not even decriminalized, it's just very tolerated.
BTW, Amsterdam is much better than Canada to smoke. Not that Canadian bud is bad, but the Dutch have better. |
