Is it okay to drive a car rented in Canada into the US?

I want to take a trip to Montreal with my girlfriend. We live in NYC, so we would fly there and stay in a hotel downtown. However, I went to college in a town just across the border, in upstate New York (SUNY at Potsdam). One of the days we are in Montreal, I want to rent a car and take my girlfriend to Potsdam, just for the day. Potsdam, NY is about an hour form Montreal, maybe 20 minutes across the border.
Would the car rental people give us any hassle about taking the car (rented in Canada) across the border into the US, even just for a few hours? Would there be extra fees, paperwork? Do we even need permission? Would we get stopped at the border?
Back when I went to college (10 years ago) the borders were pretty lax, but I think they have stiffened the rules a bit.

let me clarify:
I want to rent the car in Montreal, drive it to potsdam, NY a few hours, then drive it back to Montreal, return it. Simple transaction. No one way. no drugs. just a day trip into upstate NY. I should also mention that Montreal is the nearest large city to Potsdam, NY.
I just don't want any trouble at the border or the rental office.

It probably won't cost you any extra. But the important thing is that you make sure the rental company knows you will be crossing the border, and make sure that the insurance will cover you in the US. With the right paperwork from the company, you should have no problem at all.

Yes, you had better be squeaky clean at the border, and have all your documentation in order.

Most car rentals will do it, and with no extra fees. And that is exactly the places more likely to have done it, is places close to the border.

However, the regulations is you have to let them know and there may be slightly more paper work that customs might request. Not sure though, the extra paper might only be for car rentals in the states.

Just tell the rental company you would like permission to enter the US. It is a clause they put on your rental agreement and allows for the vehicle to be covered by insurance in the US. You will need to ask the rental company about the extra cost though. It's a pretty easy transaction.

You'll be fine, I flew in to Albany a couple of years ago because it was cheaper and drove to Montreal with a rental.

Only thing you need to do is advise the rental company you will be driving it to Canada.

I even got into an accident and everything was covered, so don't worry about it, but make sure you advise the rental company and get the insurance.

No problem whatsoever. Checked this out within the last few weeks with Alamo rentals but there's no problem with any of the well known rental firms.

So you think its time to leave o j alone why do you suggest that d i c k head ??He doesn't seem to mind to remind and smear his freedom in the face of everyone and all he is getting is smeared righy back double whamy.You are a real dumb a s s .Let the guilty party suffer ,he did not go to prison because it would have caused too much trouble but enough edivence was shown to convience the average person of his guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt,but those jurors weren't average,they barley could read and the ones who were average were thrown off the jury.this was all planned by the court to avoid problems and it looks like the book deal was planned too.Your head is stuck in your a s s so i'll call you a s h i t head!!

Yeah you need to clear this all with the rental company before assuming it's okay. If you get caught (most likely stopped at the boarder and they will want to see all paperwork) they will impound the car, and you will probably be spending some time in the local jail. Make sure it's cleared and covered first. I am assuming they will want you to have extra insurance and paperwork etc.

No, because how are you going to get the car back into Canada unless you want to keep going back, and forth.
