i've gone this route dozens and dozens of times, and trust me, you're much better off taking the transcanada to Regina and then up to Saskatoon from there - it's actually almost the exact same distance as taking the Yellowhead, but the road is much nicer and there's a lot more divided highway, so you don't get stuck behind so many slow trucks. |

Much of the Yellowhead is 2 lane. The drive is prettier, and a little shorter. You still end up on the Transcanada whether you head from Saskatoon to Regina, or go through Yorkton. |

The yellowhead is definitely shorter. It is a good highway, we travelled it this summer, no idea what it would be like in the winter. |

Not a great time difference either way. Taking the trans-canada makes for easier travel due to divided highway but it is shorter taking the Yellowhead. Not the 500 miles one of your responders stated. Have trucked throughout the areas for years. The Yellowhead just goes through a bunch of small towns but is a decent highway . Better drive depends on your comfort level. Divided highways are generally safer, faster but personally the Yellowhead is a better drive for me. |

I tend to agree with Wazullah. It's 805km along #1 and only 759km along #16. If you like to drive about 100km/h, it'll be quicker via #16, but if you're like me and like to go more like 120km/h+, you'll easily be able to make up the extra distance. The #16 would definitely be the more scenic route though.. |

Yellowhead Trail, if you take the Trans-Canada, you will have to go through Regina and that is an extra 500 miles.
Best to go now or in the spring that drive in the winter is a long and lonely trip.
I used to live in Edmonton and took the bus from there to Winnipeg, twice!! |

though you can travel on dual carriage highway for most of the way to Regina and then head on North to Saskatoon, Highway 16 (Yellowhead Route) will get you there quicker. The road is in decent condition the last time I drove it. |
