Is it required to show proof of money at the canadian border?

I was told by someone that you had to prove that you could financially be able to return to the US from Canada. Such as having enough money to support yourself while in the country. This is in addition to passport and documents. Is it true?

According to BOTH Canadian and US legal system, they can ask proof of money when entering the country. (If you are not a citizen or a resident of the country.) But it is up to the border official who will determine, whether or not you should be questioned about this. Well... this is an international law. If you travel to Europe or Asia, you will see the exactly the same law in every democratic country.

As a person who has crossed Canada a few of times I can tell you that if you are just visiting then you need the requisite travel documents, US passport and drivers license/insurance. If however you are going to be driving across Canada as I did-to Alaska --- Canadian protocol states that you need to provide proof that you have suficient funds to complete the trip and the vehicle inspection is done at the border crossing to ensure that you are not taking any prohibited items through the country...such as guns....for it a permit for 1 weapon is allowed if the weapon is properly registered and is NOT a handgun. Handguns are strictly prohibited in Canada. Rifles are allowed only if it is broken down ie not assembled 10 rounds of ammunition are allowed only. You also may not have a Radar/Laser Detector installed in your vehicle, should you it will be confiscated and destroyed.
Also, you may not enter or transit the Country of Canada if you or any of your party have had a felony conviction,,,ever in their lives.

As to proof of funds, the border guards have never asked to actually 'see' proof of money, they do ask that question however.
Hope this helps

When you cross a country border you have to satisfy the customs agent in every aspect, documents, money, etc.
There is no certainty that you are granted entry, because they can refuse it and are not bound to give an explanation.

These are overall criteria when you enter another country.

Yeah, that is true.

They usually don't make you show proof of money unless they're suspicious or in a bad mood.

Usually they make 18 year or 19 year olds coming into Canada to get wasted show proof of money. In my experiences with kids comin up from Montana into Alberta, the border guards usually make them do it there if they suspect they are just comin up to get wrecked (which most of them are).

I would just make sure you have a few hundred in your account before going. OR make up some story about how your folks or others will bail you out if you do get into financial mess. a VISA or MASTERCARD is usually good enough.

Legally, the answer is yes if you are challenged on the issue (just the same as a Canadian entering the USA).
Practically, it would not happen without very good cause.

When I went there we didn't have to show any proff of money. Only identification to get back to the us.

Not at all. The only exception might be if you were planning to stay for a long period of time, but if you are just a visitor and return to your homeland within a reasonable period of time (six months max) then there won't be any problem about how much money you have.
