Is it too cold to visit Canada in October?

me and a friend are travelling around the world, and we want to start off in New York, then go over to Canada...is it too cold to go there in October and are most things/tourist attractions shut? We're looking to visit Toronto, Niagra Falls, possibly Montreal and Nova Scotia. We will also be flying across to Vancouver for a while.

October is a bit late for Niagara Falls. They close the Falls September 30 because the river begins to freeze; they are concerned about the safety of tourists should an ice floe come over the edge. As the roads will be closed due to the amount of snow received there in September, you will need to fly. It can be a bit of a problem getting to the airports, however, but planning ahead will save you a lot of frustration. If the weather is particularly fiercesome, even the planes won't fly, but that usually isn't a worry. Tourists have only been stranded 13 times in all of Canadian history. Vancouver is the coldest city of all, but it should be fun...don't forget to 'bone up' on your French!

I've been to Nova Scotia 7 times in the past 6 years & can thoroughly recommend it at ANY time of the year. I've been in May, June, July, August, September, December & January but have been told that October is great as the trees are all turning different colours and, most importantly, the God damn Mozzies are all dead!

Well most Canadians will still have their sled dogs kennelled behind their igloos in October...nah just kidding. Southern, urban Canada in October is pretty much the same as northern urban US. So Halifax will be like Boston, Vancouver like Seattle, Toronto like Detroit. If you are there in the early part of the month then, in Ontario especially you will have a chance to see spectacularly beautiful fall colours. At the end of the month it can indeed start to get a bit chilly but not boots and parka type cold.

Have a great visit.

not a problem. Its great here in October.
Come for a visit

October is one of the best months of the year. The temperature is the same as in New York.

I have swam in Lake Superior (the largest freshwater lake in the world, located in northwestern Ontario) in October. It is usually warm in Ontario in October during the day, a little chillier in the evenings. Nothing that a sweater or light coat can't handle. Many tourist attractions are actually at their peak in October as the fall colors with the maple trees are SPECTACULAR and it is not quite as hot & humid as July & August. Take a lot of pictures!!

Honestly New York is not that far away from Ontario. They share practically the same temperatures. You'll find both places you will probably need a sweather or spring jacket around that time . Vancouver usually year round you'll find milder weather due to its location ....But don't expect to find a vast change of difference between New York and Toronto !!!!!
By the way Caroline J is pulling your leg ..Vancouver is not the coldest city in Canada the opposite and they do not close Niagra falls in September !! I have not heard of too many snow storms in December especially with global warming these days you start getting snow storms at the end of December now .I have been many times to Niagra falls in January ...lol the falls are frozen and if you look down it actually loos spectacular the way the water freezes ...like mini icebergs and caverns. Its a casino down it is never closed!!

well, many people live in Canada in October, so I think you'll be okay. You might be a bit cold in Niagara Falls, especially if you want to do the Maid of the Mist, but I think it's still open then. Niagra Falls is really cool from december to february, though, because the mist freezes on the trees and fences and stuff, it looks pretty awesome. Oh, and the CN Tower in Toronto has a new light system, I saw them testing it last night, it's really cool.

Last year it was winter winter only January & february, the rest of time it was nice.

Montréal weather in October is not much different than in the Adirondacks, mostly in the 45 - 60 F range during the day and rarely going below 25 F at night. The real cold seldom hits until December (the last two winters not until January!).

I live in Vancouver, and it does get a little chilly here in October. I started wearing a jacket in October, and there was frost on Halloween. I am originally from Vancouver Island in Victoria, and I never owned a winter jacket the whole time. I think eastern Canada gets colder, but I have never been there. I heard it is pretty in the fall.
