Honestly, it all depends on the officer and what mood they're in. Its up do their discrestion what they charge you with.

A friend of mine got caught doing 40 km/h over the speed limit and she received a $400.00 fine and a big loss of demerit points.

If you get caught doing 50 km/h over the limit theres no definite answer to what your going to be charged with. But NO, they will not take your car and automatically crush it in a junkyard. They don't have the authority to do that.

The only way an officer could take your car so that its not yours anymore would be to 1. Take it and sell it at an auction but that only happens when theres more serious crimes involved such as drug trafficing and 2. Street racing. They changed it a few years ago so now if your caught street racing your car is automatically taken and crushed (in a junkyard). So maybe thats what got mixed up with the whole crushing thing...?

Things you could be charged with for doing 50 km/h over is:
- Careless Driving
- Reckless Driving (kind of like Careless but not as bad)
- Endangerment of _______ (ex: pedestrians).

Or you could received a hefty fine and a big loss of demerit points. And if you lose enough points you have to appear in front of someone and explain why they should allow you to keep your licence.

Hope this helped!

The new law is...
Caught going 50 kph over the posted speed limit...
Automatic 7 day license suspension
Automatic 7 day vehicle impoundment
Automatic hefty fine up to $10,000

The car crushing you have heard about relates to street racing.

50 km/hour over the speed limit is a criminal code offence, on the same level as DUI. You don't get to mail in the ticket, you have to go to court. However, the crushing lawis not for speeding. Your car is seized and crushed, in Ontario, for street racing. Personally, I think street racers should be shot. Far too many innocent people have been injured, even killed, by some of these twerps that soup up there machines but can't be bothered to take them to a track to race.

California is doing the same thing.

Kinda true. a new law is that if you are speeding or racing (which would be speeding) you lose your car for a week, second offence I think you lose your car alltogether

The new law applies only to Ontario.

Yes, if you are caught over 50 km/h they impound your car for a week. Charge you for $1000 for the violation, and another $1000 to impound you car. The total is $2000 at least. Then you have to deal with your insurance going up. I've heard it is about 40% worse than if you were caught doing 40 km/h over. So expect the rate to go up about 80% from previous.
The car doesn't get crushed, but there is no questions asked and the police just take your car.

In a way it is good because they catch speeders. I am however against it because the police now become judge and jury, and we as Canadians lose a bit of our freedom. My concern is where does it stop?

?
Yup true. Then we castrate you before deporting you.

mystic_pickles
NO! Here you would get a speeding ticket ($100 + $1 for every km over the speed limit), reckless driving $270 and probably a couple others. They may impound your car.
