Is it true that most Americans think Canadians live in Igloos?

Well, My brother told me that and i wondered if it was true.

Of course not but the simple truth is that Canadians generally know more about the US then most Americans know about us. That comes about primarily since most of our television media comes from the US and unless an American comes up here they don't see much about Canada in their popular media.

I grew up near Niagara Falls Canada and yes, occasionally in the summer we would see Americans who were looking for skiing or for some other winter get away. I've met US soldiers overseas who, while quite intelligent and well traveled, didn't have a clue what life was like in Canada. Thats got nothing to do with their chosen career as much as the fact that they lived in a bubble some place down south and never really thought much about the outside world till they were thrown into it.

I wouldn't say most but definitely some.
There are also some who think snow starts to fall right at the U.S- Can border and it is so cold they need boots before they get off the bridge.

No.

No, we Americans are more educated than that. Everybody knows Canadians don't live in igloos, they all live at the Possum Lodge with Red Green.

As an American I can honestly say, "Hell No!"

Funny....but in some cases, not too off the mark. I moved to Kentucky from southern Ontario many years ago, there was much mis-information and some odd questions. One that sticks out...asked in all innocence...Did they make you leave your dog-sled at the border?

Gypsy
Yes, I think some do, but if Canadians tell them that even as a joke, what else can they believe? I've seen it on Y!A dozens of times, even on this question, where people pull their legs and laugh when they believe it. It ticks me off as well, how ignorant people can be about that but I would think everyone who had a chance would dispel the myth.

Yes, many uneducated Americans truly think Canadians live in igloos, your brother is one of them. I think most Americans are just poking fun at Canadians when they say that Canadians live in igloos.

Sim B
i heard couple of americans say that

I would say that is a bit of hyperbole. Most Americans know that Canadians live in houses like ours. Those that don't know the difference are living in a vacuum.

No, they're not that stupid.

They just think that Canada is homogenous and that we say "aboot" and live near Toronto. Other than that they usually don't pretend to know anything about us.

FH&L
Well, I'm from Texas. Do you think I ride a horse everywhere i go?
: )
(No, don't own one.)
I guess we all have alot to learn from each other.

I worked in a gas station while attending college, one day an American came in bundled up in a heavy sweater, toque, mitts, scarf, the whole 9 yds and said to me "I dont get it, the radio said it was 40 degrees today but it sure as hell feels warmer than that to me."

I lived next to the border as a child and it was very common to see Americans come across the border in July or August with skis strapped to the back for their car.

One time an American stopped and asked if there would be any problem with indians between here and there and if they should pull over and wait for "the train". It took awhile for us to realize they meant like a wagon train?

Another time an American came in and said to me "bet you have never see a car before" Yah and I am working in a gas station because? And all those other cars you passed getting here were illusions?

On the soap All My Children about 10 yrs ago Mac whats his name went to Canada for some reason in the summer and his plane crashed because they flew into a blizzard when they crossed the border, Rachel couldnt phone anyone because Canada doesnt have phones. Eventually a mountie on a dog sled rescued him and took him back to the RCMP headquarters in Canada, a log cabin in the bush and he was able to send a telegram to Rachel letting her know he had survived the crash.

It is also not uncommon to see Americans pulling over and putting chains on their tires 100 feet from the border in the summer when they can bloody well see a mile down the highway into Canada.

Yes many do believe they drive into a wall of snow when they hit the border.

I am often asked on the internet, how do you use a computer without electricity? How many dogs (sled dogs) do you have? What is like living in a log cabin? Have you ever seen a plane? Do some people send their kids to America to go to school? Can you speak Indian? and "it must be so nice in Canada, no pollution, no cars, no rat race, just beautiful wilderness .."

Then of course there are always those who think their President is ours too.

How about some of those Brits who still refer to us as "the colonies"?
A friend of mine married a British lady and her mother was horrified to think of her precious daughter living in an unsettled wilderness, in danger of indian attack. The old gal planned on packing up a years worth of food for her daughter and wanted to know what would be best for cooking over an open fire or wood stove, also packed up a dozen pairs of long woolen underwear - they lived in southern BC.

And they were so-called upper class, private school educated people.

haha, my friend said someone in america asked him this. who knows he could be lying but i found it funny. i don't think they all think this. i think people may just be joking around with stereotype?

although living in canada, i would not be able to answer this properly.

Yes its true

I am canadian however a few weeks ago Me and a friend went to the states to go skiing.

On the ski lift each time we proceeded to get to know the people and explain how we were from The North-West-Territories. Of coarse we are not we are from ontario canada. But we ask the people what these building type things were, and we told them we had never seen such a thing in our lives. We mentioned how we lived in lgloos and every person bought it. We asked what they used to build the buildings and they said different sorts of things, Some people said wood, some said bricks, siding ext. And we told them that were we live it is hard to get that type of stuff so we use SNOW.

They all believed us
It was priceless

*ajidamoon* the Eh team
Spending time on here, it would seem so, as that question gets asked quite often. Growing up in Niagara Falls, and working in the tourism sector, I too have seen countless Americans drive over with skiis strapped to the roof, asking about ski resorts........in July! Sometimes the questions you would get asked were just baffling! I'd like to think a very small percentage of Americans are actually that uninformed.......

Well some americans do not know much about canadians including Bushes cabinet who thought our prime ministers name was Shaun Poutien,That is ff with cheese and gravy. If you really want to know about the american knowledge on canada watch Rick Mercer talks to america.but on the other hand how much do canadians know about the states.I did meet a woman on the train who brought cross country skies in july to go skiing

The MisUnderstood
No, Thats up north in the north pole. Lol

Canadians live in houses just like us. Some may have a cabin. There are cities in Canada though
