Is it true that parents in Canada get 600 for every kid?

There are a number of ways in which we get money.

First off, for every child we have, IF we start an RESP for the child's education, the Govt will match the first $500 we put into that account and then after that it's our own contributions. In effect they give us $500 to kick off the kids education fund.

Secondly, every month we receive a "baby bonus" payment that is based upon the parents income and the child's age. For my 16 and 14 year old I get $170 a month and that is based upon their age and the fact that I make approx $80,000 a year. We just finished an adoption of a 13 month old and her payments start next month and will amount to $412 a month on top of the $170 a month we get for the older children. We will keep getting that amount for them until they turn 18 years old too. (Although the amount decreases as they get older, thats why I get more for the younger one).

There are other tax deductions applicable as well but these two are the two main ones that I know about. We do get a $500 a year, per child, tax credit for their physical fitness expenses and that's claimed on taxes and reduces the amount of income tax payable every year buy a bit.

It really varies for every person based on their income and several other factors. All of the things that Randy mentioned are things that most parents receive. To add to what he said and get more specific: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/bnfts/menu-eng.html

I have a friend who is married and in school and gets $1200 a month for his 3 kids (Child Tax Credit, and the Alberta Child Care Subsidy).

Along with the Child Tax Credit (baby bonus) there are many other programs a parent may apply for. Like the Benefit for Working Families, which allots money to help with child care expenses. In Ontario, there is also the Child Care Benefit. Everyone, who has a child(s) under 6, receives $100/ea for, to pay for babysitting/childcare expenses. Almost the same thing as Benefit for Working Families, but you do not need to apply, and it is a set rate for everyone, not based on your income.

Yep. As Randy explained, there are a number of ways in which Canadian parents are subsidized. But nowhere it is more pronounced than in Quebec, where they get extra bonuses for every baby.
