This is only partially true. They did link both Canada and Australia to a geosynchronous space station/satellite - just like the diamond space elevator" Arthur C Clarke proposed in "Fountains of Paradise," or the one in the Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson. Since the space elevator (which was designed by a group of scientists working at Los Alamos in their spare time) climbs beyond the atmosphere, it was necessary to build pods that could withstand the near-vacuum of space travel, though re-entry was not a factor. The designers quickly realized that it would not be suitable for skiers.
So, in short, there is a lift, but it is not for skiers. The total time of transit (when there are no weather problems) is about 15 hours. The space elevators, the space station and both entry points are heavily guarded by special ops forces. So do not expect any kind of "take down" by terrorists, like the one that happened in Red Mars.
