yes it is, and cleaner and safer too.

It depends on the area and what you are looking for, I lived and worked in Toronto when I was a chef in the 1980-90's, I lived all over the city, Cabbagetown, the Annex, Forest Hill, Wilson and Bathurst above the 401.

If your looking for a reasonable short term place, there are some apartment hotels downtown, One is of of Queen in the Kensington Market area and there is another one around the St Lawrence Market also but if you paln on moving here a 1 bedroom apartment can run $650 to 800, but again it depends on the part of the city you choose.

With easily accessable public transit, like NYC a entertainment and restaurant variety that is out of this world, friendly people and a waterfront to go for a stroll, it would be a place to check out.

Yes and the crime rate is much lower. The drivers' attitudes are much better as well.

It depends on what you call cheap. New York is expensive in rent but the income can be made. Toronto is expensive in rent and the income is not necessarily great. We pay over 40% of our income in various taxes. (health tax, gst, pst, road tax, school tax) Get my drift.

At any rate I would choose toronto as I have lived in New York and whilst commodity is less expensive there i have found the culture to be less frightening in Toronto

Its like any major city if you live in the downtown core its expensive but live in the suburbs & its cheaper. Right now cost of living is cheaper here & our transportation system is the best one fare takes you anywhere & you don't pay to transfer
Enjoy your stay & Good Luck

Depends on where you are coming from and how/where you want to live. U.S. dollar is very low now. Certainly high life in Manhattan will be more expensive but renting a room and buying groceries I think NYC would be comparable.

It's a lot cheaper. Trust me......except for cigarettes....
a commodity with the most price elasticity depending on how close to downtown you are.

and the fact that the US$ is slipping.

According to this graph, New York City is the most expensive city in North America, sitting at 10th world wide. Toronto is 47th.

My DSL costs $20 with 6 months free VOIP.

Restaurants are reasonable until you get to the tax and tip
which adds another 30%. Stay away from tourist traps.

So takeoff you hoser and welcome to the Great White North.

Being that I used to live in Brooklyn for four years and currently live in Toronto, I can honestly say that Toronto is cheaper. It really does depend on a lot of factors. For example, housing here is more affordable. My apartment in Brooklyn was 1700/month and did not include utuilities. Now, I pay 1150 CDN (about 1080 US) and it includes utilities and a washer/dryer (an expense I had to worry about in NYC).

If you choose to have a car, then gas is pricer here since there is no subsidizing in Canada. If you like to eat out a lot, I find the restaurants to be slightly more expensive. However, food in grocery stores are cheaper and I have found that I can buy all of my fruit/vegetables/carbs for under $15 CDN (lasts about 10 days).

Your question is a bit broad, but I hope I was helpful. I think your biggest expenses in Toronto will be transportation (about 100 CDN if you buy a pass or about $90 CDN if you have a small car and go through a full tank every 12-14 days) and housing (which can vary from 500-600 for an apartment share to about 1500-1700 if you live alone in Yonge/St. Clair or Yonge/Eglinton Area).

Goodluck with your move :)

Its about the same. The closer you are to downtown Toronto, the more expensive it gets.
