Is pick pocketing with a magnet tied to a string a problem in Canada?

I live in the USA within 200 miles of the Canadian border and go to Canada now-and-then.

A couple of years ago I accidentally discovered most Canadian coins are magnetic. Including their one and two dollar coins. I E-mailed with the Canadian mint and they answered saying their coins are 95% steel.

One of my hobbies involves using a ring magnet on a length of string. I wonder; Do pickpockets go about Canadian cities using a magnet and string to do their thing.

At the time of my discovery; My circle of friends included about 3 Canadians, one of which made regular trips back-and-forth to Montreal, and they did not know this.

Most of the pickpockets up here are not interested in the change in your pants or jacket. They might get how much with a magnet? Perhaps a $2 coin or two if the magnet is really strong? Most are not willing to take the risk for that.

On the other hand, on a busy bus, in the subway, or walking down some of the busy tourist areas, you can get the pickpockets that will steal your wallet right from your inside jackey pocket or your back pocket of the pants.

With that, they have any paper money, your credit cards, maybe your social insurance number (like SSN), and membership cards. They can use the cards before you cancel them, or use the info to steal your identity.

lol No. Only in old black and white B movies perhaps.

I would suggest if your Canadian friends didn't know about this then it isn't a problem. I have traveled extensively and the coins of many other countries are magnetic as well so I doubt if it is a problem anywhere in the world.

Lol, never heard of that happening to anyone, think it would be difficult to do. Would hate to think what would happen if you have a nipple or other body part pierced.

sure whatever

hahaha no, I've never heard of that! It reminds me of something from Oliver Twist

Not so much a problem after 1920. That's when they went with paper money. So the ole magnet-pick-pocket racket went out of business up there eh.
