Is racism as prevalent in Canada as it is in the U.S.?

Unfortunately, I have seen that there is racism in Canada, whether it is as bad as the US, well, I suppose that depends on what side of it you are on.

However, it is not a black/white thing so much. The racism I have seen here tends to be everyone against the "first nations" people ... what we would call native americans in the US. And then various other groups against other immigrant groups ... I suppose there is just no way to totally get away from it all.

Also, on the surface it seems much better, but if you scratch much below in some places, you see more.

Overall though, for the variety of people living in Canada, it's overall open and friendly.

Absolutely. People don't want to admit it, or perhaps they just don't see what they don't want to see, but racism is prevalent in Canada.

I live in Toronto, and it's the most multicultural city in Canada. It's not so obvious here because 40% of the population was born outside of Canada. In smaller cities it's definitely more obvious (I lived in Halifax for 7 years, and witnessed shocking things that I wouldn't believe could really happen). Even so, there are anti-racism campaigns and groups even here in Toronto.
Why would these groups exist if there wasn't racism???

Unfortunately, there are bigot people everywhere, but from what I have seen in many trips to the USA, I say no to your question.
It is not concentrated like it is in the States, it is mostly from individuals here and there, but nothing like in the southern US .....
I saw some pretty ugly situations in the States, but never witnessed anything like it in Canada....

I have relatives who live in Windsor, Ontario and I also have relatives in Toronto.

We visit them often, and I don't SEE racism, but it is there. The native people seem to be shunned out by the Canadian society and Canadian media. I heard on the news there was some problems up in Northern Ontario a couple months ago, because the native people there where mad about something and there was a big protest I think.

There is also some racism towards Indian and Pakistani, or middle eastern people, especially in Toronto. Many of them go to Toronto for a better life, but I think a lot of Canadians are mad so many have come. To be honest, when I was in Toronto I did see TONS of middle eastern people. Some Canadians think that the Canadian government is letting all those people in, and they get lots of support and jobs faster than Canadians born in Canada.

Racism is all over the world. Not just the U.S. It may be more noticable in the U.S. than Canada, because there is a big population difference.

Yes, there is. It's just not as blatant as in the USA--and it's not just towards 'Blacks'.

Canada has a lot of racism/degrading attitudes towards Aboriginals (Native Canadians) and Middle Eastern people.

I myself am never put down because of my race--and that may be due to the fact that I don't participate in it and I'm from Ireland & Great Britain....for some reason, those people/descendants aren't degraded very often, and when they are, it's by people of other races. In other words, not white. I'm sorry, it's true.

So yes, there is racism here--against ALL races.

I find it hard to say that it's worse than the US though.

Well, I'm Canadian and I can say yes, it is just as prevalent. Majority of Canada is filled with people who are not Canadian, taking our jobs (cause they are more willing to work for less pay, longer hours and crappier jobs), changing our language to bilingualism, etc. In the end, we are just as racist and angry towards non-Canadians as the US is against border hoppers like Mexicans, etc.

Well really, I find that it depends on certain area of Canada. Small towns, not as much. The bigger cities...I would imagine it were pretty much the same as anywhere else....And you rarely ever hear about racial "hate" crimes.....So, I guess the answer to your question is no.

It's not as blatant and obvious as in the US but it's there. Canadians are very polite and may think it but don't really come and tell you to your face.Haven't had it overtly done to me but I'm sure there have been times and I really don't want to sound paranoid or anything..

Just like the USA, we have alot of ignorant people in Canada, but I would have to say compared to the US, Canada is way more tolerant and polite due to our multiculturalism. I'm ashamed to say that we still treat our first nations people poorly....like Australia....I'm hoping that this will change within my generation because they have so much to offer us.

well every one is telling you no BUT i seen a show where black guys had hidden cameras and tried to get in clubs they would say their clothes were to baggy and then let in white guys right behind them in with just as baggy clothes also use shoes" we don't allow tennis shoes" and let whites in with tennis shoes there were other reasons and whites were aloud in but the baggy clothes and tennis shoes is all i remember for sure so any way to answer your question yes it is it was like a hard copy show and they said it was the 2nd one but i never seen the 1st one

Canadians have a moral of accepting people better than most nations. Many newcomers or legal immigrants are treated really well, in Canada. Sure every country has jerks and good folks, but in Canada it is our value to treat everyone as our own. I've lived in Canada Since 1994 and I've never faced racism this is in my own experience I don't know about yours but in my opinion it's very rare in Canada. There may be racist places who knows?

There is hatred worldwide. You don't have to just be in the U.S. to know/see this.

Hatred is within a person, not in a particular country or culture.
