Is the area around Hastings and Main good for as a student at Simon Fraser University? |
Hello, I am going to Simon Fraser next year and I am arriving from Toronto. I searched up cheap rent around the vancouver area since rent is so high high downtown and I found a nice decent suite near Main and Hastings (not directly on the block, but the area north of Chinatown) and it was cheap.
I have already notified the landlord that I will be moving in and I wonder if I should consider other areas? I haven't been to Vancouver before and is downtown eastside really as bad as the media portrays it to be? |

As a student at SFU you would want to live in neighborhoods of Burnaby like Forest Hills or West Ridge. Basically any place north of highway which divides Burnaby. In this area you could walk to the university and save lots of money of gas and vehicle, or public transport. The university grounds has pubs and things to do at night.
You might also consider living on the southern side of highway 1 in Burnaby in districts like Metrotown, Forglen, or Deer Lake. Public transport is fairly good and you won't have a problem catching a bus to SFU.
Burnaby is quite a metropolitan city on its own with lots of nightclubs, bars, and other fun things. These are concentrated around Metrotown for the most part.
Stay away from Hastings Street and Vancouver North in general east of Carral St!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldn't live in Vancouver period unless you were attending UBC. The rents are very high in good neighborhoods like False Creek, English Bay, and Kerrisdale.
If you wanted to get into the city on the weekends to party, from Burnaby just hop the bus to the nearest skytrain station and take that to Vancouver West where the hottest clubs in town are located. It will only cost you a couple bucks, much less than Vancouver rent. |

Stay away!! That is possibly the worst area you could have picked.. Most of Vancouver is great and they really have the homeless situation under control compared to other major cities I've been to.. However, that area is dangerous and I can't even drive down there without feeling scared. Simon Fraser is closed to Burnaby so you really don't need to live downtown and rents in Burnaby are much cheaper. I would check out www.craigslist.org. If you really want to live close to downtown look in Kitsilano although its not that close to Fraser it is a nice area closed to downtown. Hope that helps. |

yes. I lived in Vancouver for 3 years and this is an area where you wouldn't want to be even if the cost of housing is dirt cheap. The media is not hyping it up, it's a really bad area to be in. Every corner you will see people huddling together to share drugs. I love Vancouver so much but this is one area that gives me the shivers just thinking about it. |

Which campus are you going to? Simon Fraser's main campus is in Burnaby, on top of Burnaby Mountain. They do have a downtown campus as well, and a satellite campus on Great Northern Way, which is south of Terminal Avenue and the railway station. There is also a Surrey campus.
The area north of Chinatown is inexpensive and could work well for a student, but it is not a great part of town and you wouldn't want to wander around at night. Downtown eastside has been blown out of proportion by the media, and there are respectable families living in the area. But it is also a high crime area. If you choose to live there, take precautions, as other families do.
Unless you have to live in the downtown area because you are going to the downtown campus, try to find a place to stay that is closer to the campus you will be attending. |

Vancouver's Downtown Eastside - where Hasting and Main is located - isn't the safest place to be. Yes, it IS a bad area & YES you should consider another location. Burnaby, where SFU is located, would be much more convenient & a far safer
place to be. |
