Is the drinking age in canada changing after the new year?

I heard it was changing to 21 and that you would need a passport to cross the border. Is this true?

There are no plans to change any drinking age in Canada. Anyway it is a provincial thing, they are all currently 18 or 19, and so if you heard Canada was changing it, that would be 10 or more governments voting on the issue. Why would we change it? We see what a mess having a 21 drinking age is.

As for passports, you don't need one right now unless you fly. The current timing for needing one is "as soon as" the Summer of 2008. (To be announced) They keep changing it as they can't keep up with passports. And there will be no difference in policy between going North over the boarder or going South.

No. It is not changing to 21. You heard wrong.

As for the passport thing - this should answer your questions on that...http://www.dhs.gov/xtrvlsec/crossingborders/whtibasics.shtm

confused
you do need a passport
the drinking age varies from province
in quebec is 18 but ontario 19 for example but nothing is changing

no i live in canada and the drinking age is still the same and to get across the border they are going to change our driver licence they keep changing there minds so who knows

ben non!
never heard of that.
as for the passport I think its ok to get in only with a birth certificate although it never hurts to have one because you never know when they will require a passport.

have a nice day.

I have lived here most of my life and in the 1970's they dropped it to 18 for about 4 yrs and then raised it back to 19 and it has been that way for the last 27 yrs.

Here we do not require a passport, but to re-enter the US you will need one either going by air, train or car as of Jan 1 2008.

the drinking age is not changing in canada, but the passport thing is becoming a reality that is going to happen, and i'm guessing it would probably be after the new years.
