Is their a rivalry/dislike between french speaking and english speaking canadians at all? |
Just wondering, I sure as hell know that here in Britain we have a big rivalry with the French, I was just wondering what the situation is over there. I here that there are tensions between the two in Quebec, but was wondering what opinions you have? |

Honestly, not really. Maybe a few years ago when it had the Referendum on the separation of Quebec with the rest of Canada. But not as bad as that. I live in Montreal and the city is pretty much bilingual. Sometimes there is annoyance with the "Office de la langue Francaise" but overall, and sometimes problems with civil services workers refusing to talk English, we all get along. We all get along pretty much and forget our differences for the most part. I know that I do. |

I am a french-canadian. Born and raised French but lived in Ontario for over 30 years.
There is no rivalry, but the Quebec government is making it hard for other provinces though.
1) We need a license to be able to work in Quebec, but they like to come to Ontario and take our jobs. We surely don't ask them for a permit.
2) The service in retail stores is different is they know that you are English. I have seen some really rude sales clerk.
But, besides that, they're really not any different than the reat of us. |

I live in Canada- english, and have been to Montreal, Quebec, and I think it pretty much depends on each individuals opinion.
I don't think there is necessarily a 'rivalry' between the two, but certain people have their opinions on the subject and others have theirs. I can't say there is NO tension though (Ihave an opinion about their accent, but Im not going to say anymore on here);) |

I live in B.C.
That is the far west province
We are tired of Quebec, Being Uni lingual French, While the rest of the country has to be Dual language, French and english.
We are tired of the federal gov't catering to Quebec because of their voting power.
We would vote for Quebec to be thrown out of Canada, Since they always use the option of leaving Canada to get their way like spoiled children
Sorry, That's just the way it is. |

It depends where you are and who you speak to. I have no problem with the French or English communities ( or any other community). We're all Canadians in the end and I am proud to have two official languages . I speak english and french , so that might make me somewhat biased. |

Bob shark: Quebec is the second most bilingual province in the country after New Brunswick, check your facts. Any Anglo-Quebecer will get government services in English, if they request it.
Being a French-Canadian from Quebec City, I don't think there are any rivalries per se anymore, but there is certainly some dislike. Of course this does not apply to everyone; some people couldn't care less, others prefer to remain silent about it and others will be extremely loud about it.
It is tiring to hear English Canadians talk about how we always whine and complain and ''like'' to do things differently. The majority of them are greatly misinformed about the current state of things in Quebec. There is annoyance, political as much as social, coming from both sides and to me this is mainly due to the fact that we're two different kinds of people having to live in the same country. English Canadians need to understand that French Canadians think differently, don't have the same mentality and therefore will inevitably and naturally do things differently, that's all there is to it.
If a Quebecer chooses not to speak English, that is his/her legitimate right, as French is their mother tongue and just don't NEED English to lead their daily life (harsh reality, right?). We all HAVE to learn it compulsorily from grade 2 (as of two years ago, I think) all the way to university! How long do you guys have to learn French? 2-3 years tops, if at all.
Anglo Quebecers are the best treated linguistic minority in the country, while French Canadians outside Quebec are probably the most ignored of all, after the natives.
I have Ontarian friends, really good friends, and go to school with Ontarians, Albertans, Maritimers and Americans, so I obviously don't hate them.
But quite honestly, when throngs of Ontarians come to our cities on Spring Break, start drinking irresponsibly and get drunk like stupid cavemen, and literally wreck and vandalize our own public property, so much that some hotels won't accept Ontarian school groups anymore, and so much that our police needs to lecture them about BEHAVING in public before they're let loose, is PRETTY annoying. And trust me, it happens every single time. When I would go on school trips to Ontario, we wouldn't wreck anything and we'd be thankful for your hospitality.
In my mind, there is a huge gap in mentality and culture between Canada's two main linguistic groups, a difference that is not reconcilable.
As for Montreal, the reality there is really one of a kind. But if you live in English-speaking Montreal, you probably have no idea that French-speaking Montrealers are becoming fed up to see their city getting more and more anglicized each year. French will become a minority language in this city in less than 30 years. So much for being the world's second largest French-speaking city. |
