Join a health spa for a few weeks. This way you have a place to shower and park your van to sleep in without the police bothering you. I know a community that will take you in, but they want you to work on labour intensive projects. It's 40 miles from Toronto.
Or stay at the YWCA.

It gives you safe places to stay, but they aren't the prettiest... it's an awesome way to go anywhere you want to go
I'd bet they would have great deals on a motel :)
I just remembered another site -- Couchsurfer.com ... we did that on a trip to 6 Flags around the country (there are people from all over the world, and Canada)... it will save you TONS and the people are usually really cool , you can also get to know them before you try to stay on their couch :)
