Yep, Ice Storm 1998 comes to mind.
Montreal gets a few earthquakes a year, never strong ones though.
There was a huge flood in summer 1987, Decarie Expressway became a big canal.
A lot of places would be completely paralyzed by the snow Montreal gets in an average year (not to mention last year).
Mount Royal hasn't erupted in recent memory, no. |

If you are talking natural disasters, then Montreal has had very few. The most recent event we had was the Ice Storm of 1998 in Quebec, with much of the damage that occurred centered in and around Montreal.
I will always remember waking up the day after freezing rain poured down all night on Montreal. One of our birch trees had bent over in an upside down U shape and was blocking the exit to our front door.
In the backyard, a large 6 inch diameter branch from our silver maple tree became too heavy and broke off, leaving the V shaped branch section hanging dangerously between our deck and the tree it came from, and less than a foot from ripping the power, phone, and cable lines from the back of the house.
Power was out for four days in early January, typically the coldest month of the year here. We lived in the house all that time, gradually getting colder so that the last evening the house was 43F.
But we count ourselves lucky. Our power was back in less than a week, we had no damage to the house, and no one was injured or died in our community. Others on the South Shore of Montreal were not as lucky.
They say a storm like that comes only once or twice in a lifetime. We can hope that is true. |

the others have made a nice list, but even the Ice Storm or the Richard riot were nothing compared to true disasters; there have been no major earthquakes, mudslides or anything causing double-digit or higher bodycounts in living memory.
In the 1800s were were several nasty epidemics that caused a lot of deaths (not sure right this moment about #s). And there was a big fire waay back (1790s? I forget off the top of my head).

The ice storm in 1998 was actually one of the worst ice storm ever recorded with an inch of ice everywhere you would look. certain areas even had more then an inch of ice and people in the black triangle were without power for over a month. Many people suffered depression because of it. The Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal was at one point close to circulation because of its vulnerability to the load of ice on it.
Also i recall the July 14th 1987 flood in Montreal where the Decarie Expressway was flooded from one end to the other. The Subway was also flooded.
The Polytechnique massacre was also a terrible event |
