heck no - Calgary's extremely open-minded ...
... so long as your a white, heterosexual Christian and like country music..!
Seriously, not that bad in the city, much worse in the outskirts - but Calgary IS a "cowboy town" and the home of Canada's Conservative movement - that among other things opposes gay marriage and immigrants .. but as a tourist - you'll be fine. |

p_wabbit is right. Calgary's a very 'white' city and it is a cowboy town, some people grew up here before any other cultures moved here and they are still a little closed minded to multiculturality. However, Calgarians are polite and not rude. You will probably never hear about it unless you get into a deep conversation with someone or they're very comfortable with you. |

There is alot of discrimination in Calgary but people dont like to talk about it because everyone likes to think of Calgary as a accepting place. If your colored, you wont get into a night club unless you have millions of dollars. |

Calgary is a pretty diverse city, ethnically, cuturall and socially. Now having said that, there are rude and mean people everywhere. But Calgarians are pretty friendly. They are proud of their city and are trying to be more "green". There are beautiful parks, a world-class zoo, mountains an hour to the west. There are museums and a really hoppin' nightlife. The city is 3rd most expensive in Canada to live, lots of new wealth in town. Great shopping downtown and great eats everywhere.
Summer is a good time to go. Stampede week is the first full week in July and it's an amazing show. The whole city gets dressed up in western duds and has a great time.
Calgarians are, for the most part, pretty conservative, politically. They are tolerant, however, they are also family oriented and don't like things which harm or negatively impact family, personal liberty, and their way of life.
Smile a lot and people will be happy to show you around. And you'll have a great time! |

Canada is probably the most accepting country in the World, To say that there is no discrimination is a lie, but it is very rarely openly displayed. You can't be refused service, jobs, housing etc. because of your race, religion, sex, etc... But many times, people have simply given another reason for refusing to rent to a gay couple etc. Calgary has a large Indian (not east Indian) population and they are stereotyped as being non-working, alcoholics on welfare. But you will not see anyone openly discriminate against them or anyone else.

they have lots of info about the City |

Calgarians like most Western Canadians are warm hearted and friendly people, there is no planned or even accepted discrimination allowed anywhere in Canada. It is against the law,
And in any case would only be practiced by low grade ignorant people., I noticed some comments about French Canadians I for one love and embrace my French Canadian brothers and sisters
as do most people here in Vancouver. Enjoy your trip P/S Calgary is very cold in the winter months |

hi I am Latino living in Calgary
in all aprt of the world you will find someone that doesn't like people from other race, religion or any other issue
I found smoe kind of discriminations in jobs and bars
some companies wont hire you if your name is arab or latino or philipino
some bars wont let you in if you are not white blue eyes but in general is not so bad compare with areas of US or Europe |

There is racial discrimination against cab drivers because most of them are Asians and they are the worst Drivers. The public transit system is also very bad. They have no central station where Tye all meet. You get lost very ease.It is also very expensive to live here. For a world city its very dead here no night live. The best time to come here is June or July.Having a friend here will make things easier for you.So come and see for your self. |

Yeah. I don't know what race you are, but they seem to hate the french the most. Especially French Canadian. AS from other minority, I thought they were better than Americans, but my Canadian relatives make me believe that may not be correct. I think they keep it hidden better. Blacks and Hispanic seem to be treated a little better, because they are all employed up there. I wouldn't worry if I was you. I think they don't like minorities moving in, but they don't seem willing to act on their prejudices. |
