You can take the CAT Ferry from Portland to Halifax, then VIA Rail Canada to the rest of Canada.
Amtrak goes from New York City up through Vermont to Montreal, again picking up VIA Rail Canada.
Or, NYC to Albany to Niagara Falls on Amtrak, then to Toronto on VIA.
NeOn Bus also goes from NYC, Rochester, or Syracuse to Toronto for cheap, on new buses with WiFi. Megabus, too.
Note these are long trips. You might do better flying from Boston. |

I am pretty sure there is absolutely no form of public transport from Maine to Canada, atleast not directly. You probably would be able to take a bus/train back south and then up into Canada (Montreal area).
I live in Maine and can tell you that outside of the major cities public transport is pretty much non-existent. I'm not sure what you meant by the driver not having a passport, will the driver be staying behind while the rest of you go? All will need passports/ID cards to cross the border regardless of how you do it (bus, train, boat, car etc).
The only option direct from Maine to Canada I can think of is as another mentioned, the CAT Ferry from Portland or Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia, you will need a passport/ID card for this as you go through customs at the ports. |

we don't have a lot of public transport in the US...we drive....the train MAY take you to some places (but probably not where you're going...)and buses are NOT the way to go here...they go from city to city and don't stop at ALL cities (and buses in cities are few and far between.) |
