Hiking or mountain climbing, i.e. just with boots and perhaps a stick or requiring crampons, ropes, etc? For the former there are lots of possibilities really close to Vancouver in Canada and just south in Washington State. Whistler and the area near it has some stunning hiking trails, many of them in Garibaldi Prov. Park (http://www.elp.gov.bc.ca/bcparks ).
For mountain climbing you will have to go a little further out. Probably the closest is Mt. Baker in Washington, but there are other challenging peaks all over BC and in Washington.
There is also a great deal of rock climbing near Vancouver. Stawamus Chief at Squamish is, I am told, one of the most popular rock climbing sites anywhere. |

The answer is Vancouver.
Really, there is so much, all over, you can not imagine it. |

Lots! The Chief is a famous cliff face, just a few miles outside of Vancouver on the road to Squamish. But there are a great number of climbing sites around Vancouver - the city is surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. |

There are some short trails on the north shore. If you want longer trails, head north. |

It all depends if you actually want to go mountain climbing or rock scaling. For scaling the is The Chiefton near Squamish up Highway 99 north of Vancouver towards Whistler. If you just want normal mountain climbing try taking on The Lions located in North vancouver. Very scenic. |
