Is toronto, being in the east, more polluted than the west coast? vancouver, b.c., for example?

i've often read that we on the west coast, breathe cleaner air: case in point, poor eastern europe polluted by "the west" see national geographic cover [unsure of year--early 90's?]

Prevailing winds in both Toronto & Vancouver and the western coast of Canada are from the West. In Toronto that means the air pollutants emanating from Michigan & the Mid-West US are carried over Toronto (not to mention air pollution from industry located just to the west of the city.)

Whereas Vancouver & Canada's West Coast get winds off the Pacific Ocean, which acts as a huge buffer or air-filter. Thus pollution levels are much lower than experienced in Ontario.

its because there are mountains and a lot of trees and vancouver has less people and cars than toronto which makes it less polluted.

Toronto air is more polluted then vancouver but for most of the year the air seems fine, it is only on hot muggy days in summer that you really notice the pollution.

Explorer
its very clean in Toronto compared to American cities, but BC is cleaner than Toronto

The polluted air actually comes from Ohio (and surrounding area). It is blown over the Great Lakes into Toronto and surrounding GTA. This is why we have far more smog advisories than our neighbours to the south. It also makes it one of the worst places in Canada to live if you have a breathing disorder. (I still love Toronto though).

Lived in both. The air in both locations is just fine.
