Weed is essentially decriminalized for possession of smaller amounts making it de facto "legal" in the eyes of many..
The law actually stating this, NEVER PASSED, but is pretty much treated as such.
Police have the discretion to charge you for posession of between 15 and 30 grams (30 grams is just shy of an ounce) anything over that and its considered trafficing - which will ellicit a charge. That being said, I know people who have been busted with pounds and grow ops and walked with a slap-on-the-wrist.
Police discretion will differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.. in urban centres - its usually pretty lax, less so in the small towns (excepting places like Nelson, as the other poster mentioned). Bear in mind though, that possession - in and of itslef gives police "probable cause" to search you, your residence, etc.
Also, as was mentioned, you can completely legally possess medical marijuana (with doctor's note), and it can be grown under special licence. As was also mentioned, Cdn attitudes are pretty relaxed towards the weed, but sharing a border with the US as we do - we've been "forced" to buck up or face more severe border controls. |

"No" however on or near College campuses in British Columbia, you are legally allowed to have a little over a dime bags worth. Also in the town of Nelson, British Columbia the population is made mostly of old ex-hippy Americans and you can do almost anything you want. I personally don't smoke. |
