Isn't it great being Canadian? |
I know I'd have this undescribable pride when the country just South of me is supposedly the world's richest country, and yet I'd have free healthcare and the people in that so-called RICH country don't?
And I'd know everything going on in that country South of me, and yet also have this secret world of knowledge from my own country that the people in that richest country generally don't know about. Additional Details Take things a notch farther, what would it be like to be a citizen of Nunavut? Where people have yet another level of their own world? A self-government within a country within a continent with land access to the states.
And free healthcare and then yet ANOTHER level of autonomy above that even. Maybe some Canadians would want to retire in Nunavut. |

Yup! It truly is a wonderful place to live! But I have lived in South Africa and I have lived in California and they were pretty wonderful in various ways too. One place I have lived for my entire life is in my own mind. No matter where you are physically, it is your mind set that makes a place good or bad. A person who hates their country and cannot see one positive thing about it is not going to be happy anywhere.
Nowhere on earth is perfect and perfect is a very subjective word anyway so perfect countries are an impossible dream in reality. It is life's problems and puzzles that make life interesting and worth while. How to fix them becomes a reason for existing.
The world is a huge laboratory with a lot of different rooms and we are the scientists trying one thing and then another in the quest for the serum that will cure the illness or at least alleviate the symptoms until we find the cure. Sometimes when we have suffered in a diseased environment, the cure is to go somewhere less diseased - like a lot of war refuges do.
But The U.S. and Canada, at their worst, are not like that and have not been like that since Civil War days when the underground brought refugees from slavery here. Those who stayed behind have been witness to a lot of changes. They may not have viewed them as historical changes at the time, but many of them were. And now the biggest historical change in our lifetime - a black President. Wow! How can you hate your country that has just done that? Your countrymen have overcome a problem that a lot of us thought we would never ever see overcome! How can you want to leave and not be a part of the changes that this is bound to bring? Why are you not out there getting involved and helping those changes happen? A mind change is needed here.
This answer is more in response to Justin's answer than to your question, Eric, but his answer so amazes me and saddens me. I had to address it.
Edit to Eric - falling in love with another place is always ok. I fell in love with South Africa. Great country; struggling new government. If I wasn't here, that is where I would want to be. But I have seen Justin's posts other places and this young fellow is just filled with negativity. HE is not in love with Canada. He is in hate of himself and the U.S. of which he is a part. You can't run away from yourself! |

I love my country, but have always had a level of respect and admiration for our American friends. I've lived all over the world, but Canada is the one place that feels like home.
Let's remain cordial and polite to our American friends.

I was not born in Canada, but I emigrated to Canada when I was about 2 or 3 years old. I love Canada with a passion and I would not live anywhere else. I am extremely proud of every bit of our Canadian history. However, the U.S.A. is one of our closest friends and our closest trading partner. We are both soldiers of western democracy and we are both part of NATO. We are more than allies, we are "buddies".
What can I say?
I . AM . CANADIAN!! |

Yes, I am truly glad I was born in Canada where I am lucky to have the freedoms I do. As for retiring in Nunavut......no thanks. I live on a Native Reservation, and we already have our own self-government, within Ontario. I am thinking of retiring in Manitoba though........... |

Where do people get the idea we have free health care in Canada? Do you really think doctors are unpaid volunteers, and hospitals are charity houses? We pay billions of dollars in taxes in order to be able to offer universal health care.
When I had my car accident, there was no question about my treatment, it was decided by a surgical team in consultation with me, not by an accountant. We guarantee all resident citizens and legal residents who have gone through legal residency requirements access to membership in our health plans. We can choose our doctors.
But, we pay for it with everything we purchase, and in our income taxes, so it definitely is not free.
The country south of Canada has nothing to do with my pride in being a Canadian, I am proud to be a Canadian because of Canada.
Do Americans find a source of pride in being a neighbour to Mexico? Of course not. |

There are three things, along with others, that have made my life good.
First, that I was born white and therefore without the struggles that people of color have still today. Second, that I was born a woman with the ability to give and nurture life and with a calmer demeanour. And finally, that I was born Canadian, in a clean, less violent, large, unique and wonderful country.
I am a proud Canadian and I love everything about this country from the weather to the two official languages to our diversity. |
