Montreal is beautiful in the winter, although very cold - make sure you bring super warm clothes. After New Years it might be quiet depending on how soon after you come.

Depends what you want to do while you're here, I guess. Lots of winter sports within easy access of the city (some even downtown), shopping/eating/drinking still going to be as hot as in the summer ;)

All the touristy things like museums are no different in January than any other time... basically it's the same great city with a huge white blanket over it and the leftover Christmas lights lining all the beautiful streets. I say go for it! But then I'm partial...

I like Montreal better in the winter. Go it isn't too cold and there may be some snow but that only makes it a better experience. Lots to see and do, definately go!!

If you're driving, I'd say don't come here. The road conditions aren't good. We're having a lot of snow and it's been a little colder than usual this winter- We didn't even have a White Christmas last year, but we've already had some major snow storms this year.
The upside is that it's gorgeous.
Apart from the road conditions, I'd say that Montreal's always worth a visit.

Oh for goodness sakes you are only eight hours from us. Its not like you are living with palm trees lol...wake up..there are alot of the US under snow as well. If you go to Vancouver you will be poured on with constant damp rainy weather. Its fine if you want to walk around with rubber boots on and it can rain so much your feet may become webbed. I lived there trust me its gloomy.

If you mean if it is a good idea to travel to Montreal, Canada in January - I'd say Montreal can warm your heart any time of year. If you're from NY I'm sure you have warm clothes.

Montreal and New York City are not that different in terms of weather in January. You are a bit further south, so the temperature may not dip down as far in NYC as it does here in Montreal, and I believe because we are in the St. Laurence Valley we tend to get much more snow than NYC, but otherwise it should be about the same....windy at times, snowing, and cold (between 20F-30F most days).

If this was my first trip to Montreal and I was going for a vacation, I probably would not select January, just because Montreal has so many more things to do in the summer and fall months (We are considered the city of festivals, as we have various events that go from June into September). But you will still get to see a lot of things, and the prices for hotels may be cheaper in January.

For a January visit, I would select Quebec City and their winter carnival if you planned to go north from New York for a vacation. Otehrwise, I would push you to go south to Jacksonville, FL or fly out to Las Vegas, since flights are reasonably priced from JFK.

But even if you are intent on driving up here to Canada in January, you would have a great time in Montreal nonetheless. Old Montreal horse-drawn sleigh rides, Chinatown, Biodome, Museum of Fine Arts, St. Joseph's Oratory, Mount Royal skiing and tobogganing are all things available to you at this time.

Montreal is a great place to visit any time of year.
the roads and driving in the city might not be that pleasant after a snow storm but the great thing about it is that you leave your can at the hotel and can go wherever you want on foot or by metro. if its too cold you can go in the "underground city" it leads almost anywhere but you don't have to walk in the cold outside.
also, the food and clubs are very good in montreal (so is the shopping), you'll have a lot of fun. i recommend it 110%

lol

i traveled from ALbany to Montreal overnight in January and got stuck in a huge snowstorm. Got off the Northway in Lake Placid for a few hours. Finally when we got to Montreal it was 10 below zero and windy.

But the club we went to was smokin hot!!!!

Go!!

AJ
YES! don't go to Toronto its very polluted at montral you get sort of a outdoorsy feeling real fresh air, but that depends what part you go to

Valley R
