Just how cold are southern Canadian winters?

(Does it vary by geographical location?)

Yes. Traditionally, it was coldest in the prairies, especially Manitoba. You could have temperatures going down to -40 celsius, and when you factored in the windchill factor you would pretty much freeze your butt off.

Quebec is a bit milder, ranging from 0 to -20 from December to March, with the occasional cold snap and heat wave. We used to get the most snow (you could lose a car under it!) but as others said, we seem to be getting less snow, and more frequently ice storms and freezing rain.

It seems the bigger dumpings of snow have shifted east to Northeastern Quebec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. However, they are still a bit warmer in winter because they are close to the ocean.

Ontario is like Quebec, only milder in the southern parts like Toronto, Windsor, Welland, etc. Temperatures of 0 to -10 celsius are common. And not as much snow.

Warmest by far is British Columbia. They only get snow in the mountains (usually) and in mid-winter you can wear a heavy sweater to work in Victoria or Vancouver, but bring an umbrella.

i live in southern ontario and depending on where you come from originally you may find it pretty cold.
this year was actually really warm though, and it didn't even snow until after christmas!

if youre from florida, expect it to be very, very cold
however, if youre from say maine or pennsylvania, dont expect much of a difference :P

Here too this year winter didnt really start till mid january....but temps here vary so much....winter can get as low as -40C(-40 F) -45C(-49F) but this year was good one....not many real cold days....summer right now...well one day it was 35C(with humidity) (95C) and following day was 20C (68F) go figure lol..........yes it varies from coast to coast...think the west get more rain.......and east....LOTTA SNOW....

Snow is becoming scarcer and scarcer with each passing winter in Toronto...in the past 5yrs we've only had "green" Christmases. Now if any snow falls it will usually be mid-January to early March with a few surprise dumpings in April. The temperatures, on the other hand, start to fall quite dramatically starting in November, dipping down to -15, -20 degrees Celsius and in January, February the temperatures feel more like -35 to -40 with the windchill.

In Montreal, it is not as cold as it used to be. Usually, in January it was -25 Celsius, but now it is more like between 0 C -10 C... Not much snow too... Not anymore...

well i'm in southern ontario, and really it was very warm up until Christmas this year we got rainy damp weather I remember up until Christmas, so it varies, I think it's more colder in Buffalo then here in southern ontario.

Yes the cold in Canada varys by location I always tell people that Canada has a 70 C temperature swing from -35 C to +35 C. That usually catches all of the provinces and territories. There are regional differences West Coast & Souther Ontario are milder the arctic territories are colder

In the Vancouver area in canada it rarely does snow there. (north of seattle) but i heard in other southern parts of canada it does snow.

but i can tell you that vancouver is the nices area of canada because it doenst snow.

Canada is the second largest country in the world so yah it varies, kind of like Seattle and Minneapolis? Or NY? Is their winter weather different? It isnt like you drive into a wall of snow as soon as you enter Canada ANYWHERE.

Get a map and look up how big Canada is.

Southern BC warmer winters than the rest of Canada. Semi arid, West Coast of BC , warmest winters in Canada.

Well, what do you mean by southern Canada?

try checking the states that line the border...same weather, just in celcius.

remember much of southern ontario is south of michigan, some of new york and most of the eastern seaboard...

open a map....
