For the greater part of Ontario which is on Eastern Standard time, Alberta is 2 hours earlier - so 5 o'clock here in Ottawa is 3 o'clock in Calgary, which is on Mountain Standard time. Some of the western edge of Ontario is into Central Standard Time. A good place to get a map of Canada's time zones in JPEG or PDF format is here
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/reference/national/timezones
Another way to find out is to bring up your clock on the computer - lower right hand corner - click on it and it will give you a calendar and there is a time zone window. In this case you would go down the list to find Mountain Standard and click on it and then apply. The new time will show as Mountain Standard. The trick with this is to remember to reset it back which involves finding Eastern Standard and applying again.
Personally, I find the maps the easiest. |

"Hi'...... I could give you a quick answer but I think I'll explain why there is a time difference. lol
Well as you know the sun rises in the East.....and sets in the West and with Canada being the second largest country in the world we have a few times zones internally as we are approximately 5000 kms. wide !
The East Coast of Canada is 3 to 3 1/2 hours ahead ( Maritimes ) of the West Coast (B.C)
********* But lets take your case and assume you are in Toronto, if so you would 2 hours ahead of Calgary local time ! This is based on Greenwich ( in England ) mean time !
Now the reason for this is that the sun is moving from East to West across the Canadian sky......and while you are having bacon and eggs and a morning coffee in Toronto at 5.00 a.m. the sun hasn't reached Calgary yet and it's still 3.00 a.m. there...way too early for breakfast. lol ! ( 2 hours difference)
What the heck...here's a map of the different time zones in Canada....
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/reference/anniversary_maps/timezones
Hope that helped and that it all makes sense to ya ! *S* (Michael C) |

Depends where in Ontario you are. I am in Ontario and I am in Central Time Zone. From basically Thunder Bay east, they are Eastern Time Zone. (with a few exceptions in northern Ontario)
So...if you are assuming like most people do that "all" of Ontario is Eastern Time Zone...if it is 5:00 in Ontario, then it is 3:00 in Alberta.
Or, if you want specifics....5:00 CST where I am is 4:00 Alberta time. 5:00 EST is 3:00 Alberta time. |

2 hours behind...it would be 3 o'clock in Alberta.
TO is in the Eastern time zone, Alberta is in the Mountain time zone.
BC and the Yukon are Pacific; Alberta and the NWT (and a teeny bit of BC) are Mountain; Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut and a bit of northeastern Ontario are Central (but SK doesn't observe daylight savings time, so it's technically Central Standard and Mountain Daylight); most of Ontario and all of Quebec are Eastern; the Maritimes are Atlantic, and Newfoundland is 1/2 hour ahead of Atlantic time.
