I moved to Canada from England many years ago and this has been a great place to raise my family.

The area where I live is great - St Thomas in Southern Ontario, which is a fairly small town, pop 36,000 people.

We are just 15 minutes from the sandy beaches on the north shore of Lake Erie, ten minutes south of highway 401, 20 minutes from London, Ontario (pop 350,000)

The town is surrounded by farm land - corn, soya beans, some tobacco, orchards and lots of dairy & beef cattle.

This area has a good economy, affordable housing, pretty good schools, a hospital, a Municipal Airport and is a great place to raise a family.

It is fairly quiet here and people are neighbourly and businesses are friendly too.

I can drive to Niagara Falls in 2 hours, Toronto in less than 2 hours, Detroit or Buffalo in about 2 hours also. There is lots of open space and I wouldn't live anywhere else!

http://www.discover-southern-ontario.com - lots of information on this area, the towns & villages here, the ecconomy, housing, nature & wildlife of the area.

Good Luck in making your decision.

Depending on where you're moving from in the US you may not consider our weather "good" anywhere. Vancouver definitely has some of the best weather in Canada but I believe it was recently ranked something like the 13th most expensive city in the world so it's far from affordable. Consider Halifax, Nova Scotia, it's got milder weather than most of Canada, great universities and hospitals, there are quite a lot of jobs in most fields, and housing is very reasonable. It's a small city but has pretty much everything you'd need.

If I was going to do it over again I'd look at Halifax NS, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are too expensive to live in and who needs the hurley-burley of life in a big city. Halifax has good universities, hospitals, an OK climate they do sometimes gets LOTS of snow being the capital of NS the job situation shouldn't be too bad

If you decide to come welcome

There are great areas all across our beautiful Country but you would need to define your definition of affordable where housing is concerned. A few responders suggested Vancouver and for beauty, better weather, they are right on the mark but housing is expensive. If you want an idea as to housing costs go to mls.ca. You can then enter price, size of home etc and compare prices in each area of the country. For example, if you enter a 3 bedrrom house in Vancouver, you may find the cheapest starts around 2-300,000.00, you can then try Toronto area, then try Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton etc. For affordable houses, try Canada's east coast, try Moncton, New Brunswick and area, Moncton has some of the best hospitals in a recent survey on death rates , some great schools, nice winters(in comparison to some areas), lower violent crime rates and some of the best beaches. Good luck with your search. And for jobs, if you find an area where you can afford a home, go to Government of Canada. You will find a national job bank where you can check on employment in that area.
