MOVING TO CANADA AFRAID OF ICE? |
Hi, I'm irish and moving to ottawa next december. I'm really looking forward to it but I'm really afraid of falling in the ice. I know it's silly but when the weather's bad here I really hate walking to college or work and that's just for a couple of weeks! Everything else about canada I love but does anyone have any tips so I don't fall on my bum? |

Hahaha cute Q!
EVERY Canadian has fallen on ice one time or another... most people many times.
Get some good winter boots and be careful when you walk. Make sure you put ice salt on your steps and driveway so you don't slip there. There's really not much you can do about it... just be careful when you're walking... and even if you do fall, chances are you'll be okay. I've only known one person that fell on ice and got injured bad.
Welcome to Canada. :) ♥ |

In Ottawa, the city, homeowners, and businesses scatter salt and grit on the sidewalks to make them less slippery.
You'll want sticky grippy boots - and you may find that when it's not too cold, your trainers (running shoes) work well.
Also, a friend of mine swears by Yaktrax (link below). |

Wear proper footwear(I'm always surprised how many women try to walk around in snow with high-heeled boots), take it slow, and you can even buy things with little spikes on that fit over boots. Also, when it's really cold, ice isn't as slippery as it is when it's very close to freezing. And it's much harder to hurt yourself if you fall while wearing heavy winter clothing |

They sell grips that slip on to your shoes...easy peasy.
Our winters tend to be snowy here. I'd invest in a good pair of boots (goretex, if you can). Wearing regular shoes in 10-30cm of snow...horrible idea.
Walking on snow/ice, like anything, requires practice. It's about maintaining your balance (we're all used to it, so it's second nature).
If you plan on driving, you will need snow tires. Seriously. "All season" tires...you're having a laugh. You can actually take a winter driving class, which probably isn't a bad idea.
Safe travels...Ottawa is a lovely city. The Rideau Canal will freeze over for winter, and everyone will be skating on it. Great fun. |

Uh, actual ice? There's not much you can do. I'm scared of falling too. I just walk slowly, my friends always yell at me for falling so far behind but their the ones who fall on their asses. |

Haha it's like a right of passage around here. To truly live the Canadian life, you have to take a tumble on the ice :P
Walk carefully. When your here long enough, it'll be second nature for you lol. And in the meantime buy some boots with really good grips on them.
And BTW, Ottawa is gorgeous :) |

If your not 70 years old with osteoporosis there is really nothing to be afraid of. Especially until next December sometime.
.. but if you are staying th winter .. you will have a full dose of "immersion therapy" for your phobia and by spring you will fear no more |

wow so you're afraid of snow?? its only for like 4 months, and in ottawa it's not even that cold, unless you go to winnipeg, or churchill, manitoba, and those 2 are very far. and the tip is to wear a winter jacket and boots.... |
