All of the events previous posters have mentioned plus these:

Many Canadians fought in the Korean War.

Canada celebrated its centennial in 1967.

The collapse of the Atlantic cod fishery in the early 1990's was the greatest economic disaster the country has ever known in that more people lost their jobs than in any other event, including in the closure of auto plants, etc.

Repatriation of the constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982.

The October crisis of 1970, and the enactment of the War Measures Act.

The ice storm of January, 1998.

The sinking of the oil rig Ocean Ranger on Febraury 15, 1982.

Easy... the 1995 referendum. Think of how many Canadians sat stunned in pubs and bars across the country as they watched their country come within a few thousand votes of being torn apart.

Maybe when all of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police got new horses issued to them. : )
