The absolute best value we have found in phone cards are the Walmart phone cards, but you have to buy them in Canada, not the US. With the ones you buy in Canada there is no extra charge for using a pay phone. We use those cards whenever we travel. |

If you have broadband, I would get a skype phone, so you can make free (or v cheap) calls via the internet!
If you do not, I would get a phone card - most travel agents should be able to sell you one or point you in the right direction. |

if you live in GTA, go to any convinience store, just give them the name of the country and ask for the cheapest, they are very helpful... I always talk with my friends in UK 1h for $1 |

Lived in Canada for three years and phone cards are the best. Be careful - there are some really bad ones. The best one is the "red one with the black buildings" - with no connection fees. Call 1 866 807 1797 and press # to find a local retailer (we got them from local newsagents in Calgary). |

I agree with the Skype answer. Also, I recently bought some 'Skype out' credit, which allows me to make very cheap calls to any landline and mobile from my computer. I'm in Thailand and frequently make calls to Germany and the UK. |

If you register with jajah.com and the person you want to call, also registers with them, then your calls are free! '-)
The call is done via computer, but you talk to each other using you own telephone!
There are some downsides, so read the rate page carefully! For me to call locally or to a cell number is more expensive using them!
On the upside, I live in Holland, all my family in Canada. To registered users, I pay nothing. To unregistered users and cell phones I pay about 2 cents a minute! |
