Medical insurance for living short time in Canada? |
Hi! I'm Canadian but I live in Philippines with my wife who is filipino. We are thinking of going in Canada and getting her a visitor's visa for that but the problem is she is pregnant and the Canada medical will not cover her medical expenses in less she is already a landed immigrant. I can't help her to become a landed immigrant yet because I'm disabled and will be awaiting my disability pension application approval after which I can sponsor her. My question is does anyone know of a way to get her medical coverage that would cover her even for the birth of the baby???
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. |

Don't listen to the insurance person. You'll get ripped off! Advice, stay in the Philippines until the baby is born, then come to Canada. |

You can buy insurance for anything if you're prepared to pay for it. Talk to someone who sells insurance. Are you aware that airlines have restrictions on pregnant women flying? The rules vary by airline, but in the third trimester it may be difficult to fly at all, and the airline may require a letter of approval from a doctor. |

My advice would be to check with Blue Cross Canada. They are a private insurance company that can offer you the coverage you probably would need. Keep in mind that since you already have a disability for which you may/may not need treatment or medication, and your wife would expect to need some hospital checkups if she is staying for any length of time in Canada, the policy rates will likely be high.
At the very least, they can point you in the right direction. |

You don't need to prove income to sponsor a spouse but the amount of time it will take you to sponsor her is probably not fast enough to get her legally into Canada and covered by healthcare before the baby is born.
Why not have the baby in the Philippines? Since you are Canadian, the baby will still be a citizen. All you need to do is send the babies and your birth certificate to the government to get the baby a citizenship card and then you can apply for the baby's Canadian passport. |

you will find insurance companies will not cover pregnancy and birth.... and as she is already pregnant it is classed as a pre existing condition so again she wont be covered |

If she is already pregnant, that is a pre-existing condition and they will likely want a huge extra amount of money to cover her for that.
She may be better off staying in the Philippines until the baby is born.
