Moving permanently from England to Canada? |
I am a young, middle class dude moving permanently to Canada in some months from England and though my first stop based on the immigration process is Montreal, Quebec, I want to know what will be the best city to finally settle in. Been reading a lot about Vancouver (scenery n fun, jobs?), Alberta (heard its got job boom, fun?), Montreal(heard vibrant, fun, integration?), Toronto (expensive, fun, overpopulated, jobs?). I know it's kinda subjective but I'm black, young, single, fun loving with major ambitions to go to some arts/media school. Any leads/guidance/word of advice will be appreciated. Will appreciate somewhr with work too. Additional Details To add to the above post, I am moving as a permanent resident got this by applying as a skilled worker. Intend to go back to school sometime later but settling in and where is most important. |

Well the eastern side of canada (quebec, ontario) are getting hitting harder in the 'economic CRISIS' then alberta and BC are. I have lived in both these provinces, and visited almost all of the other ones. And BC is hands down the best. Calgary has tons and tons of jobs, even now that some people have started to lose them. The wages are also a lot higher here, but so is the cost of living. As for Vancouver, the city is too big for me, but it is very pretty being on the ocean. You should also consider Victoria BC. Not as big as any of the cities you have mentioned but it is gorgeous, and definitely has its own unique and fun vibe. |

I live in Ottawa and love it here but you may be better off in Toronto while attending school.
Best of luck with your move. I've been to England and loved it, maybe we should just trade houses? LOL |

Well, there's nowhere in Canada that's "booming" right now with jobs. But Calgary, Alberta has a higher than average population of young people. You would really like it here. Especially with your English accent, the girls will be all over you! Also, there's plenty of schools here, I'm sure you could find one that suits you. |

Your opening words caused me a problem. You claim to be a "middle class dude." I hope this class consciousness does not present a problem here. Unlike the U.K. we are just Canadians and not termed from different levels of social acceptance .
Whatever your choice of locale I wish you the very best of luck and trust no offence at my suggestion is taken. |

Vancouver gets my vote. Lively but smallish city, great scenery, lots to do, not too much winter. Your colour won't be a problem anywhere, especially once people realize you're English. Lots of Brits settle in BC because of the climate. At first you'll probably just have to go where you can get work in your field, but take the time if at all possible to visit other cities and see what you like. |

You wrote, "...Alberta (heard its got job boom, fun?)..." Hate to break it to you but there are no places in Canada experiencing any kind of job boom. We are in the midst of a recession and many Canadians are losing their jobs.
I assume you have a student visa to study here. If not, you'd best get one pronto. |

As a Canadian who moved to England a few years ago, I can say that only Canadians would call Toronto overpopulated. It's a big city, and it sprawls, but it's never as crowded as I've seen Birmingham on a Saturday, let alone London.
Montreal and Toronto are both fun and quite livable, in terms of good neighbourhoods, various things to do in one's free time, and options so that you don't have to keep going back to the same places if you don't want to. I can't speak to Alberta or to Vancouver, having never been there.
One last point is that it's entirely possible to live in central Toronto or Montreal without a car, something that you don't see much in Canada, I'm afraid. |

What you heard about those cities is kinda right...
but I suggest somewhere in Nova Scotia. Although I am from Toronto, it's too busy and it is overpopulated.. plus getting pretty dangerous, like any big city.
Try going to a few cities to see what they're like, then make a slow decision for a permanent settle.
But I suggest Halifax, I used to live there and I still love the place. |
