NO! You are fine. As a Canadian Citizen your passport only has to be valid during your leave. If you get back before it expires you are fine. Check my link on the Canadian passport FAQ's.
I just did this. Before my passport expired I took a quick flight to Vegas and arrived home the day my passport expired. No problems.
It is your only option. If you are planing a trip before early June you wont have a passport processed anyway. They currently report it takes 45 business days to process.

My passport was set to expire in July. I went and got a new one (renewal is the wrong word). I asked the guy who was processing my documents if that 6-month rule was in effect and he said most countries require it be valid for 6 months. He said its best not to take the chance that the country (i.e. USA) doesn't accept your passport.
With that said, it doesn't hurt to get a new one. You'll need one anyway.
